i widdled myself a nice little spoon out of wood but i dont know what i should put on the wood to keep it from catching fire. is there some kind of varnish or lacquer i can use that wont heat up and possibly emit any harmful chemicals? anywhere i can get this info? thanks in advance!
I guess just dont hold the lighter on the bowl for too long and you should be fine. Just bring the flame up to the weed for a second and then pull away, repeat if nessecary.
using a screen, or fixing a gasket as a bowl may be a good idea as well... i dont know about straight wood..
I tried carving a pipe once. I ended up cutting a chunk out of my finger, but at least now I have a cool scar, and a funny story.
^Dont want to pry, but around where in CT do you live? If you dont wanna say your town, just wonderin around where...
i carv alota bowls out of wood. dont put any chemicals on the wood. also, i dont know what kind of wood u used, but i wouldnt recomend pretreated wood. anyway. once u get a nice layer of resin on the bowl you shouldnt have to worry about burning the wood. untill then keep the flame on the bowl for only a short time when smoking.
I was thinking some kind of fire-resistant finish. Just make sure whatever you paint it with isnt flamable
My friend just made one, he soaked it in vegetable oil and that kept the wood from burning. I toked with him last night out of it and I didnt taste anything but weed so I guess it worked. Also building up alot of resin will definately help.
the oil would have kept it somewhat moist in the outer edge of wood, i was gonna reccomend oil, but then i thought that it probably doesnt really make a difference at all, think about lighting a fire, you dont start by holding your lighter on a stick, you start by making a large flame with kindling and paper. your lighter, if anything, will char an outer layer of wood, thereby protecting the rest of the wood from burning. but it really depends on the wood, that doesnt work for everything. as willy said, the layer of resin that forms will protect it. the same principle applies for aluminium, when you use it enough, the resin layer stops the flame from even touching it
thanks for all the helo dudes. ill try smokin it without oil and if i get a problem ill do the veggy oil thing.
