i'm wondering if anyone here is a student of sri chinmoy, or if anyone's been involved with the centre. i would love to hear some first-hand info/testimony; i've been asked to become a student and while i'm leaning towards declining, ...i'm not into joining any sort of spiritual/religious organizations... i am wondering about what other people have to say about the whole thing. peace
All I can say is from my strength community stuff - he's a charlatan. Not only has he credited himself with these terrific lifts with supposed witnesses who are real people who have said once they found out he was using their names "who me? I never saw a thing". His photographers have admitted the whole thing is camera angles.
really, irongoth? lol... i have also heard other various accusations.. abuse, corruption, scandal, etc. whether or not the stories are true, i'll probably never know. still, as far as the centre goes, the people are lovely, and i like the relaxed atmosphere... just go in, have a chat, meditate, no rules & regulations. but as far as becoming a student goes - i didn't much care for all this talk about how sri chinmoy can... "meet you on the spiritual plane and guide you", "you'll sense it when he accepts you as a disciple" and so on. i was ignoring said rubbish; i don't think i could become a student and still ignore it. i would start getting all twitchy when people talked. ha i've been thinking it over - what do i have to lose by joining? what's the difference between going to the centre to meditate, and going as a student? i decided that going as a student means i'm buckling myself in to a certain philosophy, and it's totally not necessary for meditation. i wonder if they'll boot me out. ......we'll see, i guess. oh, and... irongoth, what do you mean, your strength community staff? thanks! any more info still appreciated, people. peace
there's this crazy lady in woodstock who always walks around complaining how sri chinmoy is psychically controlling her life. she blames him for everything from her homelessness to the library computers not working. nutty as a fruitcake. apparently she was involved with the center, and got scammed. she was probably bonkers to begin with, but apparently her experience there just fed her mental illness till it got out of control.
RE: really, irongoth? lol... Really. Dude's a liar and a charlatan. If he's lying about being able to lift 5,000lb, he's lying about other stuff. RE: i have also heard other various accusations.. abuse, corruption, scandal, etc. He's a 60s guru. They're all crooks. RE: whether or not the stories are true, i'll probably never know. still, as far as the centre goes, the people are lovely, and i like the relaxed atmosphere... just go in, have a chat, meditate, no rules & regulations. Sure - just watch yerself. It's a cult. Strength community stuff - I used to and soon will powerlift and we actually knew via email the person Chinmoy said had certified his world record lift. Dude said "I don't even know who this guy is" but boy was he pissed that this would-be Gandhi was using his name to huckster people.
one should check the guru rating serving to find out about a particular guru http://www.globalserve.net/~sarlo/Map.htm btw, why is this topic in new age? it shoud either be in "cults" or "gurus"
thanks for your replies. i'll check out the site, molly. i put it in new age because i wasn't sure where it would get the most replies. you're probably right, i could have put it into the yoga & meditation forum, in retrospect.
Not only do I think the guru rating site is extremely disrespectful by its very premise, but I also think it is very pretentious. Who can judge wheter a person is enlightened or not? In order to judge which is the best among a group, one has to be superior to that group. A guru is not someone who is marketing a product. All that true gurus do is out of love and compassion, not for personal gain. To rate them on a scale of 1 to 10 is like trying to measure the orbit of the earth with a footruler.
He's the guru who was followed back in the 70's by Santana and John Mcauglin is he not?? They did a record - 'Love, Devotion, Surrender' - I don't much like the album. I know Santana has moved on from this - he's no longer calling himself 'Devadip' - otherwise don't know much about him.
What if he's a guru with a sense of humor who elaborately stages stuff to look like his exploits are faked? Ohh. Wait. God is.
