I dunno about deadliest, but it did flatten the city which had at the time been like the second wealthiest city in America second only to New York or somesuch or so I've heard.
that is what the media is saying....... who knows what will happen with this storm though...... its strengthening big time right now, but they are hopening that it will weaken a bit when it hits the colder waters around texas...... still, NO and louisiana will be hit with heavy rains, as if they need more rain.
"On September 8, 1900, the hurricane slammed into Galveston almost head on. Waves were higher than 15 feet and winds howled at 130 miles per hour. By the time the storm passed, more than 8,000 people were dead, countless were injured and half of the island's homes had been swept away." http://www.noaa.gov/galveston1900/ galveston kinda blows shit all over katrina...
you know what does piss me off, though, is that since everyone is going to be so much more prepared to listen and to get the fuck outta dodge that somehow that's going to make is a racial thing all over again. "look, no white people died in texas!! bush only cares about his kinda people." bush may be a lotta things, i won't bother to argue, but sometimes people just get irrational.
Rita Swirls Into 165-Mph Monster in Gulf AP - 24 minutes ago GALVESTON, Texas - As many as 1 million people were ordered to clear out along the Gulf Coast, and hospital and nursing home patients were evacuated Wednesday as Hurricane Rita turned into a Category-5, 165-mph monster that could slam Texas by the weekend and inflict more misery on New Orleans. Forecasters said Rita could be the most intense hurricane on record ever to hit Texas, and easily one of the most powerful ever to plow into the U.S. mainland. Category 5 is the highest on the scale, and only three Category 5 hurricanes are known to have hit the U.S. mainland — most recently, Andrew, which smashed South Florida in 1992.
But if Houston has to be rebuilt, then it looks like this is the beginning of the end for America. Come on, I lost it on that comment.
I have a friend in New Orleans, whom I can't get ahold of. I'm from HOUSTON. My father is a firefighter there. He refuses to leave. He wants to rescue people. But what if it takes him? All my old high school friends...about 3 aunts (2 are cops and I'm sure will refuse to leave as well), cousins....all in Houston. Katrina was bad, but this...Rita...that's my family she's headed for. That's my blood, my father. And they're waiting for her. I'm extrememly worried.
i'd imagine about the same odds of any other weather phenomena. seriously, i'm not going to go all "this is global warming!!!" because i kinda know better but i AM glad that there are people who will change the way they're living....
Well, tonight I went to a bar and saw a live band (I do it every wed night). There are usually 150 to 200 people there, but tonight there were only about 13 people there at any given time. It was fun. But it shows how many people are evacuating Houston. All of the highways out of town are backed up as I type. It's incredible. I'll be staying here through the storm, but the area I'm in shouldn't get hit too hard. All the cool people and hippies are headed to Austin right about now.
Lovely Rita meter maid, lovely Rita meter maid Lovely Rita meter maid, nothing can come between us when it gets dark I tow your heart away Standing by a parking meter when I caught a glimpse of Rita Filling in the ticket in her little white book. I the cap she looked much older And the bag across her shoulder made her look a little like a military man. Lovely Rita meter maid, may I inquire discreetly, When you are free to take some tea with me Took her out and tried to win her, Had a laugh and over dinner Told her I would really like to see her again Got the bill and Rita paid it, Took her home and nearly made it Sitting on a sofa with a sister or two. Oh, lovely Rita meter maid, where would I be without you, Give us a wink and make me think of you
