for a while i was a bit suspicious of all these "Threads for Heads" books floating around (the first official how-to patchwork instructional guide). I knew Lauren Clay stopped selling them on her site and def wasn't selling them on ebay. I bought one on ebay for around $30. i know its alot of money but the author wasnt selling them and ebay was the only place they had the book. After seeing a listing today, i realized that i has seen multiple listings for "Threads for Heads" by this same seller, so i decided to check her feedback.

this is how many listings that were within the past 5 months that i could see...(which means there can be tons more!)all of this book:

20 (only in the past 5 months)

this girl is going to kinkos or some copy store and getting this book copied for cheap, and making profit off of Lauren's work

one book was bought for ONE HUNDRED dollars. the rest were from $29-40. she also recently changed her ebay user ID. this is what she says on her listings:

ONLY $3.00 S/H...(if bidding goes over $35 s/h is FREE!)

and listen to this feedback by a seller:
Arrived well, printed weird/odd page order. Otherwise good book.

it scares me that she's sold hundreds of items, many of these probably being the book. now go check out her most recent listing for the book:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5427423662&fromMakeTrack=true

she even copied the description of the book from Lauren's site. im thinking of making another ebay seller ID and bidding on her book, and then marking my payment as "sent" and leaving her neg feedback, saying that she is a ripoff so everyone knows. the author is not getting the money or credit she deserves for making this wonderful book that has taken lots of time and thought. i wanted you all to know this in case you happen to go on ebay and bid on this.

this is Lauren's website for her book:

    http://www.geocities.com/poohdoh/book.html

what this seller is doing is highly illegal and selfish. oh, did i mention bad karma?

Contact Lauren, who will presumably contact the seller and E-bay. The next step is a lawer.

wow that is a shame that its happening to lauren. That is one of the things i dislike the most about some people, they will do anything for money and rip anyone of without a care. if i did something like that i would feel so guilty that i would send all the $$ i made to the person it belongs to.

dude this girl made hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars off these books. figure she sold about 30 of em for 35 each, and one for 100 bucks. im sure she even sold more than her feedback shows for the latest dates

That is soo horrible.. i cant believe this ebayer would do something like that. I wonder if there is anyway to contact ebay about this and let them know that someone if making copies of something and selling it, that would violate copyright laws...

yea i think i actually got one from a similar type of seller..i think its photocopied, but maybe thats how Lauren makes them. mine is a blue cover..i dunno. i dont think copying it for a friend is a crime, but making hundreds of copies and selling them on ebay for tons of money??! what the hell. i tried to get one from Lauren but she never responded

I think Lauren is still selling the books...there was a thread not long ago about it. Are you sure she's not reselling real copies of the book? The reason I mention it,is because I bought a real copy from Lauren's site a few years ago. To be honest,it's not of the best quality...the printing isn't clear on all pages. It looks like it's made by having it mass printed at Kinko's or something. (Still a great book though!)
Did anyone else notice that about their copy?

But anyways,if she really is selling photocopies then that's bad. I think you buying one is a good idea..that way you would get her name and address atleast and you could warn others by posting negative feedback.

Edit: I don't mean you should actually pay for it though :p

maybe thats the problem... people would buy legitimate copies if they existed.

Meaning, if Lauren was actually still in contact with people who wanted them. Not that I am excusing the "phantom photocopier", but she wouldn't be as successful in selling them if the actual authour still bothered. I mean, you said she hasn't updated her site in a year, and that she hasn't replied to your emails.... so how else is anyone supposed to get a copy?

If I wanted a copy... could I get one at a bookstore? No. So, I could search random yard sales and flea markets, but what is that chance that I would actually find one?
So... looks like ebay... but how do you know you are buying an actual "author endorsed" copy and not one of the "phantom photographer"s knock-offs?

The chick selling photocopies isn't right. It is theft. But... if the author hasn't stopped it, doesn't sell them from her website, and doesn't respond to customer emails, then well... what is the "patchworking public" supposed to do?

PS. Supermommy, you are going to hell, you realise...

I searched for that thread but I can't find it...anyways,I think that's what it was about. Someone had ordered a book from Lauren and never received it...it had been way longer than normal shipping time. I'm not sure if they ever received it.

thats still no reason to buy it from a scammer, or no reason to do what the ebayer is doing. if lauren clay isnt selling, then you dont just take advantage of that. we don't "need" the book but im sure theres orig copies floating around. i dont trust the ones on ebay anymore since i saw all this

naw its not lauren selling the stuff, they have 2 diff locations and info ect. if it was her she'd be saying she's selling her book. instead it says "a great book by lauren clay"

I was playing Devil's Advocate. I said repeatedly that the "phantom photocopier" isn't right. If the actual author still made the damned book available in the first place then this photocopier wouldn't be in business. I don't want, need or give two farts about the book, as I can't sew, and probably never will sew.

It simple supply and demand. The demand is there, and the supply isn't. If the supply was there, this alternative method of supply would dry up. It's called Economics.
