Festivals are great for kids unless the parents buy some mali. Its OK if they buy nugget.

The smaller the festival the better. Bonnaroo is a walking nightmare especially if youre hallucinating.

theres nothing like following the herd to the next show at a festival. so much energy by the bands and so much energy by the people listening.

Fests tend to be kid friendly.
High Sierra has a kids area with crafts and storytelling circles, and I would guess many others do, too.
A babe in arms will just hang with you, obviously, but a runner can have a big patch of earth to call their own at the back of the crowd.
Start kiddos who are 3 or 4 at a local day-long fest, and add camping as they can handle it.
I think you have been to Shwagstock? I'd think that would be a good intro fest.
Parents should be aware it is on duty 24/7 just like home with three thousand guests.
Be aware and alert and know where your kiddo is at all times.

Crafters can clean up with inexpensive kid items from glow crap to dance wands, simple capes, face paint, etc.
The other side is lots of kid-marketed stuff is crap.
Bring tons of water and juice, and snacks. Hungry kids are brats who whine and annoy many more people that just you.
