I met Charles Bukowski for the first time way back in the 90s. My folks had thoroughbred horses which raced out at Hollywood Park & Santa Anita. Chuck would hang out at the barns - I thought he was just a track-bum, but our trainer said the he was a famous author. I asked him what kind of books he wrote, and he said that he only wrote cookbooks and children's literature. He said that he would buy me beer & cook dinner for my girlfriend and me, if I would drive him home (he didn't drive). After that, he was gone for a month or so - but when he came back, he had an old gym bag filled with poems & books - he said that he was just kidding about writing cookbooks and he wanted me to have some books and a bunch of unpublished poems - then he died - that was back in 94. ** there were some copywright issuses - took the photos down
i"m so jealous. that's AWESOME. I started reading bukowski a few years back. i particularly like his novels. Pulp was the first I read and became an instant fan. believe it or not I still haven't seen Barfly. I hear it's pretty damned good.
