If I was going to teach a course in religion, or if I could be a guru and recommend books to people for their spiritual development, here's what it would look like:

1.) The Spiritual Tourist by Mick Brown
2.) World Religions by Huston Smith
3.) The Sacred and the Profane - Mircea Eliade
4.) Jesus: a Revolutionary Biography - John Dominic Crossan
5.) The Mystic Christ - Ethan Walker
    6.) anything by Paramahansa Yogananda
7.) Islam in Focus - Hammudah Abd al-Ati
8.) Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert Pirsig
9.) How Different Religions View Death and the Afterlife - Johnson, McGee
10.) A New Religious America by Diana Eck
11.) God's Politics: Why the Right gets it Wrong and the Left doesn't Get it - Jim Wallis

Thanks for tuning in. Now you can tune out [IMG]

    I would add:

    12) What the Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula.

I would read page 408 of Dean Koontz' "The Taking".

Why is that? Completely random page in the book or meaningful esoteric humor that just passed WAY over my head? :p

Add "the prophet" by Kahlil Gibran and "the book" by Alan Watts.

    Nice choices... :)

Sri Swami Satchidananda has also written some good books. He started an awesome yoga retreat in VA, and also a universal shrine dedicated to religious freedom. It's in Buckingham County... Far from any urban distractions.

It looks kinda cartoony lookin' in this pic, but see my attachment below.

Cool. Thanks for all of the suggestions on other great spiritual/religious books. I'm always looking to put titles on my wish list of books I'd like to experience before I die.
