Who here loves the Quick Stop? Does anyone know if Smith choose to use B&W or if it was all he could afford?

    That is a good movie.

And black & white is so much better than color.

Clerks was filmed on really tight budget, something like 25-30,000 dollars. There's no way that he would of been able to buy another camera. I really don't even notice the b/w. With or without color, the movie still kicked some ass.

Ya I'm a Kevin Smith fanatic, so since it's the movie that started it all... thumbs up!

I should also add that Kevin Smith's main inspiration for this movie comes from the 1991 Richard Linklater film Slacker, which was also shot in black & white and under a low budget.

Actually, Slacker is in color. It's very low-budget yes, being shot for $23,000 but it's definitely in color.

Speaking of Slacker, Criterion is releasing it on DVD this August in a 2-disc edition. Very exciting, as I am a big fan of this film.

Yeah, i just saw clerks again a few days ago, damn its a great movie. Its actually a little more expensive to shoot something in black and white then in color.

Yeah, that's right. I don't know why I thought it was done in B & W. It's been a good five years since I've seen it. Weren't some scenes shot in black & white, though?

Another reason Clearks was filmed in B/W was because it was mostly shot at night when the actual store was closed.
If you didn't know, one of the alt endings, Donte gets shot right after Jay & Silent Bob leave. What a way to end a sucky day. It's in the DVD version.

And speaking of Slacker (filmed in Austin) My friend and lodge brother John Slate is in the movie. He's the JFK expert in the library.

    "OOOOOOo Navy Seals"
(my buddies used to torture a friend or ours who worked in a video store with that line. often heard from around the corner of the store)

Yes, there is one black and white scene where a film student lets various people pass around his camera and shoot whatever they want. The whole scene is shown from the viewpoint of that camera. I can't remember if it was Super-8 or what, but it's gritty, amateurish black and white film.

Really? That's very cool. That guy is a very memorable character (for me, anyways). Conspiracy A Go-Go.....

Hahahaha. I love clerks. There wasn't an un-funny part in the entire movie. I dug the black and white.

Just rented it tonight. I liked it. I had heard it was black and white because black and white was cheaper, but i dont know about that. but of course 16mm is much cheaper than 35mm.

I'm pretty sure the use of B&W film was an artistic touch, since color film is much easier to come by these days. This one took me by surprise when it came out. We saw it first-run in an art theater. There were like 12 people there. Nobody knew what to expect, and the laughter was pure and unabridged.

    A true classic in deed.

    [Malaise]

"I'm not even supposed to be here today."

"Bunch of savages in this town."

"Why do you smell like shoe polish?"

"Anyone got a ball down there?" / "About the biggest pair you've ever seen dingleberry!"

"No time for love Dr. Jones."

"36!*#?... You sucked 36 dicks!?" / "Well, 37 including you."

"Don't suck any dick on the way to the parking lot."
    **customer follows her out**
    "Hey! Get back here!"

    "Wrangle for me..."
