I dont really get this whole "selling out" thing. I think its perfectly fine for an artist to endorse something he likes/uses. Whats the problem, Im sure if ANYONE here got the chance to do it they would. J.J
there are bands who don't it truly depends on the person, the "bend" (if one exists) and the label most bands do eventually sell out..... they sell their music, get rich, lose connection with the suffering that made their music good and become bad of course the thing is some bands don't really sell out, but that's what is accused, they just only have so many songs in them, or they were always bad and we grow up, realize it, don't think we were ever THAT fucking stupid and say it's their folly and not our own......
If not 'selling out' is supposed to be a indication of the quality of music or the band not wanting to take the fast buck.. thats such elitist trash. If some darn good band got some coverage by 'selling out' first before they became 'rich and famous' what are they being entrepreneurial ? [i think so]. It is only some idealised notion all this anyway. Is it supposed to show humility and 'respect' for the music etc etc etc *yawn*. Quest_techie..who do you think has not 'sold out'.
Selling ou. Its where your singing about the class war or something, then accepting a CBE. The music might stilll be good, but the band have sold out.
selling out is also when a band/ artist does change for the EXPRESS reason of financial gain. Honestly moving in a new direction and picking up a bunch of new fans is simple evolution. Like SCI. I don't like it, but when their hearts are i the old stuff, and some new, they still are magical in my eyes. licensing a song is often out of the artists' control. Such as "Revolution" being used by Nike. Who owns the Lennon-McCartney publishing rights? anyone? Michael Jackson. And it is a HUGE moneymaker for him. I expect Dylan's work is owned by a Columbia subsidiary. Or the manager. And we know the manager is supposed to help an artist get fed.
Thats a fair angle to come at this at.. yeah.. though lots of bands started out singing about such things, and altered there perspectives as they matured and became less political.. they may have 'sold out' in some peoples eyes , but why should they continue thinking the same way as the fans may [if they don't want too].. I understand the point , but it just all seems subjective.. On that score i think John Lydon is the archetype for 'selling out'..not that i respected or liked anything he has ever done
lydon was fully created to sell by Malcom Mc Lauren, though. always was a fad. and jerk. bad interview...so full of himself by the PIL opening for INXS days..ok, which probably chafed the ego...after all it was so big.
Roger Daltery Buddy [god knows how many episodic 'comeing of age' tosh ..i had to watch at school] Buddys Song ..god awful film about the boy when he grew up... I agree with you.. Apologies for bringing God into this.. Is he a sell out ?.
most celebrities dont endorse things that they like or use, they simply endorse to get money. it's like the brady bunch episode when they were going to be in a commercial for laundry detergent, but they didnt use that brand, so they didnt want to do it, until they tried it and discovered it was better than the brand they used. besides materialism leads to greed, which is evil. and some products (nike and suv's) don't deserve to be endorsed. so basically your favorite celebrities turn themselves into that annoying salesman at the mall who wont leave you alone, for a fat paycheck. it's all about morals.
i try to look past all the meaningless fodder and see the music for what it is: music. then it doesnt matter if the artist sold out, cause you dont even think about them.
hey everyone this is a reply to the original message: man, selling out can vary from artist to artist, there's the artists that pretty much sell their souls to commercialism and then there's the artists who actually do endorse something that they either believe in or like. I' fine with the second type of artists but for the first type there's no room in my heart. i've had my bitch lol peace all
lol it's cool to see that so many of you replied to this post, it shows that you are passionate about you're music and not only that but you all love it.....it's awesome peace
