mobile home or shed won't make too much difference, mobile home probably insulated better tho, so there'd be less work. for soundproofing, do your research, those insulating tiles or materials and stuff aren't really worth wasting money on... it's all in reflections and breaking sound up with stuff like curtains, dressers filled with magazines, proper placement of monitors and stuff like that. Future Music Magazine (home recording mag) just did an article on this a couple of months ago; it's worth investigating, they gave some great tips on how to do it without spending any money at all; just using junk lying around... and it works.

as in what you need to record with, you don't need much of anything, it's entirely dependent on what you want to do. a decent microphone, a guitar, a decent soundcard and the right programs can do whatever you want. I use Fruity Loops because it records live audio, utilizes vst's, is a full blown sequencer which is great for synths or making drums or whatever, and I started on it and know it like the back of my hand, so I don't really feel like switching to cubase or traktion, which are the only other programs I'd want to use for my personal needs. I run guitars through GuitarRig, which basically emulates every cabinet and head unit known to man, and is frighteningly accurate. For example: it's "twin cab Matchless setting" sounds cleaner than I can get my actual Matchless amp to sound when mic'd with a 57, 58, or the Neumann. I'll never record from an amp again.... :)

oh and for soundproofing, there's some site on the net that lets you plug in the dimensions of your room, and where you have stuff placed, and it calculates where you need to add dampening... but I forget where it's at and didn't readily spot it in my quick google glance...
