I thought we could make a list of music/songs/artists/albums that make you happy and can take you out of those bad times. *If there is a thread already like this, point me in that direction and I will stop yapping.

    My first entry.

Frampton Comes Alive by Peter Frampton, anything of that album makes me happy. Guilty pleasure, but I love it.

a lot of music does that. when I'm not feeling the best I just throw on some of my favourite music. if that that doesn't fix it nothing will. there's just a familiar feeling, something kind of comforting in listening to those bands that are so special to you. as far as my bands, I have to say buffalo springfield is one, creedence clearwater revival is another, cat stevens, willie nelson is wicked too

I, personally, listen to Pearl Jam's "Alive" to fight with depression.

For me, happifying music should be of the jumpy-shouty type, not the slow, relaxing stuff. Simon and Garfunkel doesn't work for me when I'm feeling down, for example, it actually sounds very melancholic to me.

Ska-P, Iron Maiden, Electric Six, and newer Ancient Rites get the feeling right, as well as most things you won't want to be caught listening, like Falco, The Village People and similar artists. :)

ELO - "Livin' Thing", it's a sad song but it is desperaltey sending out a message against suicide. It is sorrowful, it doesn't breakthrough depression, but I just want to add it here, it is a sad song. Anyways I always found ELO to be depression more or less

Radiohead? But I thought they sounded rather depressing. Or perhaps to you they are cheerful? or maybe it's just because you like them a lot so they make you happy.

I dunno, I reckon ELO's 'Mr Blue Sky' is pretty uplifting...it just sounds so smiley and the lyrics -

Sun is shinin' in the sky,
There ain't a cloud in sight
    It's stopped rainin'
    Everybody's in a play
    And don't you know
    It's a beautiful new day

it just seems to be the breaking out of depression song...even though it acknowledges later that the night comes in there's that line about 'i'll remeber you this way". It's great.

other good ones - Goldenhorse, The Brunettes (both kind of poppy, but in a Belle and Sebastian way, not in a top 40 pop way, especially the brunettes).

and I find some dub bands to be great too - they just get you dancing and you forget about your troubles. 'Fire' by the Black Seeds is great for that. As is every black seeds song.

another great lift up band is Polyphonic Spree. There's just something about songs like Hold Me Now and Light & Day that make me smile so much (and the music vid for Light & Day is so fantastic, especially if you've seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

and finally, though it's kind of embarassing to admit it, I really like that Ben Lee song 'catch my disease'. It's all about being happy with what you've got, about being just being happy no matter what life throws at ya.

when I have depression I have to wallow just for a while, or I can't snap out of it. "happy music" only makes it worse, for me. so I recommend "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M. because it reminds you that you are not alone. Then go on and listen to the rest of Automatic for the People, one of the best discs ever IMO. Night Swimming is kind of nostalgic and borderline depressive if you're feeling that way, but if I'm in a good mood it's great.

When I'm depressed, I usually listen to depressing music. Such as the Eels album "Electroshock Blues". Damn thats a depressing CD... I guess it makes me feel a little better to hear songs about people more depressed than I am.
