Caffiene... ohh its horrible. I don't like sodas and coffees and all of that stuff but I just can't seem to kick tea. I know its not good while your pregnant. I'm just obsessed with tea. Hot tea, iced tea, suntea, chai tea... you name it I drink it. I tried to cut down but I always end up drinking 3 or more glasses than I intended to in a day (I try to say one cup in the morning and thats it). Can you guys please suggest some new things to get into to drink thats minus caffiene? For some reason I'm really into strange things or things full of flavor, all babies fault I swear ;) . How about a way to kick the habit? Does anyone know the exact amount that is ok in a day/week? I've been trying to lean on apple cider and water more... I feel like a nut without my tea though.

haha I'm a tea addict too... I tried to go decaf when I was pregnant and ended up getting terrible headaches. So I went back to the caffinated. I drank like 8 glasses of that stuff a day if not more when I was pregnant. I couldn't help it. But Trey came out just fine!

I feel for you Earthy Mama. I'm a "caffeine-oholic" myself. My day doesn't seem complete without it unfortunately.

I have only within the past two years become addicted to caffeine. I refused to touch even a drop during my pregnancies, and my lust for caffeine was nil. But now that I have 3 little ones, two of which are 2 year old twins, I feel so tired out most of the time that caffeine is the only thing that keeps me going.

Bad? Yes. Easy to stop? No. But it can be done. Unfortunately, I'm not ready to try that yet. ;)

    Hugs...

A friend of mine is completely hooked on pepsi max. Any other type of pepsi and he can tell the difference. But he relies on his pepsi max and it seriously isnt healthy!

    Hi,
Most of the research done on ladies who imbibed caffine and had problems with their babies was done on women who drank more than 6 cups a day. Have you tried cutting down to 1 caffinated cup a day? If you are having trouble doing that just ditch every caffinated teabag in your house. Gift it to a friend and then fill your house with healthier teas- get raspberry leaf tea- really great for uterine toning and to get your body ready to deliver.
How are you feeling otherwise? Congrats, your so lucky to have three-I'm pining for #2.

there are so many teas that really taste awesome, but don't contain any caffeine naturally. ever tried rooibush teas? Don't try to cut down all you black tees, but maybe substitute some of them with herbal teas, rooibush teas, spice teas, yogi-tea, there are infinite possibilities. I have a huge tee collection, and far less coffeinated ones then without. (onle the chai, and green tea section...)

maybe try a rooibos chai? susun weed reccomends raspberry leaf tea during pregnancy--maybe you can get your hands on her 'childbearing years' book and give it a read.

definitely try to cut out all caffeine while you're pregnant. and try to stay mellow. the neurotransmitters present in your body while you're gestating can greatly affect the way your babies brain develops--especially the parts of the brain that make up your child's personality.

you know, cutting out all caffeine was totally impossible. the doc told me that the amount you'd have to drink to harm the fetus was like 50 cups of full strength coffee. the real issue fo rme was my blood pressure, and keeping hydrated. so i have my habitual 2 cups of coffee (half caff now) and replace those with twice as much water throughout the day. and that keeps me from having the withdrawal headaches. i've got enough problems without adding withdrawals...

your doc is an idiot, kc. if you wean off the caffeine gradually, you wont get headaches. the caffeine is going to keep your bp elevated.

it's important to find a balance between cutting out vices and staying mellow, but anything over 300mg of caffeine/day has been proven to cause miscarriages and low birthweight (lbw) babies. i personally think that caffeine should be totally eliminated--any toxin is too much toxin if you ask me.

i think a lot of women have a skewed perceptions of what's involved with lbw babes. my half sister smoked thru her pregnancies specifically so that she would have smaller babies and easier labours--how fucked up is that!? babies with a lbw can have compromised intelligence. there's also a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, etc in the long term. and during infancy, lbw babes are sicker, more prone to failure to thrive, etc...

That's true. I used to work at a coffee shop at 5am so you can bet I was addicted to caffeine. When I quit, I cut my caffeine intake down alot, mostly because I was waking up at normal hours. Since I've been pregnant the most caffeine I get is in the occasional hot chocolate or chai latte (which is mostly soy milk anyway). And I've only had those about 5 times in the 3 months I've been pregnant. I've heard that a minimum amount of caffeine daily is fine but I agree with whoever said that the least toxins, the better. And the headaches definitely go away if you cut down gradually. I know, because I used to get monster headaches but they didn't last long and now I hardly get them at all.
