I've decided to go on another trip - my last international trip was brief (1 month in Europe) and am thinking about doing 2-4 months this time. Most likely all in Southeast Asia. I don't have a huge budget, so will be be doing the budget backpacking thing. I'll probably fly into Bangkok (cheap flights) and then go from there. If I get a Visa in time, I would love to do Vietnam and maybe part of India if budget permits. Interested in Cambodia and Laos, and Bali for sure. Just seeing if anyone has done a similar trip, or will be doing a similar trip. Also, for anyone currently in one of the above places I would be up for meeting for a drink or something. Oh yeah, I'm a pretty strict vegetarian - does anyone have any advice for eating veggie in Southeat Asia? Peace
Southeast Asia is not exactly vegetarian heaven, but you will be able to find some veg restaurants and meals. India, however, is. Visas are no problem, get them in Bangkok. I will be in Vietnam, Laos and possibly Cambodia around october/november/december, so I will take you up on your promise to meet up for a drink or two if you are there at the time.
Be careful of what you eat. Had some bad experiances. Locals playing 'trick the forgien girl'. Sometimes street vendors vending food should be avoided, sometimes they are your best bet. It depends on where you are in the city and country. Maybe that doesn't seem like clear advice, but it might make more sence once you are over there. For example, in a rich area, the restaurants might be too pricey, but the vendors should be reputable and much, much cheaper. Some veggie soups/stews aren't as veggie as you might think. If you don't recognize a vegetable, either ask someone you TRUST or take a small bite first (odd shaped, really hot peppers put me in the hospital once).
The use fish sauce in alot of the good and that horrible sugar stuff. I'm veggie but got over the fish sauce, other than that the street food was great, just had to nearly grab there hand to stop them putting the sugar in. As Bird_Migration said, India however is as veggie friendly as you can get. Happy travels!!! Om Shanti
