The civil war and the south that lost....

Up north its hardly ever mentioned (the civil war) but here in the dirty south they seem not to be able to let it go and to some, a yankee rates even below your average white trash....whats up?

personally i think it would be nice if we could split the country into four or five smaller ones if only people agreed on it and it could be done peacefully. a loose confederation would exist between them, mostly for military protection. i'd suggest the northeast, the southeast (i'd have this extend from texas to florida, with the old mason dixon line as the northern border), the midwest, and the northwest and southwest. most of these regions have more in common with each other politically than they do with the rest of the states, and this could make things a lot easier in terms of controversial issues people can't seem to decide on. the political ties between them would not allow for one of the countries to insist another go to a foreign war with them, but if one country is attacked all of them must help defend.

i dunno, maybe its just me, but i'm sort of leaning towards the opinion that we never have gotten along entirely, never will, and not agreeing on things hasn't exactly helped us too much in terms of making everyone happy. if the southerners and midwesterners don't want gay marriage overall, fine, whatever. but some parts of the country DO think its ok....so why should there even be the possibility of a small group pissing off whole regions of the USA who feel differently? i dunno....course you could still keep taking it further and further saying the area is too large and people disagree too much until you just have a bunch of independant counties and townships at war with each other....lol

Wtf? I live in midwest, the confederate flag hangs in many yards. And even while Hight I find it difficult to see the derogatory term for blacks being so freely used in the term "Ni**e*!" Im high and it is really sad to see the 'war' may be over only the racism still exists and as long as ppl free to go round yelling the word N*gg** then it is hate and thus the war has never ended.

the war never had anything to do with racism anyway. slavery was more or less a side issue, an item brought up later and used for economic warfare against the south. while i don't believe for a minute that emancipation was wrong, regardless of morality the emancipation proclamation was an unconstitutional act of war. in fact, when running for office, lincoln made it WELL known that he thought black folks were inferior and he had no intention of dismantling the institution of slavery.

i am fine with southerners displaying and appreciating the confederate flag in certain circumstances...there is a cultural pride and heritage to keep, and there was a time they were their own country. they still share the bond of a culture that we northerners do not understand. however, the confederate flag as we know it today was not the flag of the confederate states of america as an independant political unit, it was the BATTLE flag of the CSA. the original political flag looked very similar to the union's flag: this couldn't be used in battle because of the confusion it would create on both sides. it later was a white flag with the confederate battle flag in the upper left hand corner; this could not be used because on a fair weathered day it could be mistaken for an all-white flag of surrender. it later manifested itself as this: which is similar to, but still QUITE different from the flag you see people flying today.

to me, the history and cultural pride attached to "southernness" is perfectly acceptable, and holding on to certain things, such as a flag, is innocent enough. however, the fact is people are flying the flag of war; a declaration that they wish to fight, that they are full of anger, resentment, bitterness, contempt, and in most cases (because of recent developments rather than what the confederacy actually stood for) bigotry and ignorance.

i find it fascinating that even in the far north we see these flags everywhere....

I miss the south, but I had to leave as my brain was slowly suffocating to death due to lack of creative conversation and due to too much talk about nothing at all.
