I think i want to take a year off after senior year, and im just wondering what would be the best way to bring it up with my parents? Has anyone here done this, and how did they tell their parents? Id like to do so in the most effective, promising way
let them know that you talked to many people that are in their twenties (like me) that went to college right after high school... werent ready to go then so slacked off, and ended up messing it up... only to go back a few years later because i wanted to and was ready at the time, and they did a million times better. honestly, i would advise everyone to take a year or two off after high school.
Make sure you're disciplined. My year off has turned into 4. About time to get back now, luckily I had an extra year from no 11th.
Interval is right, after taking some time off you'll want to go back, and have a better idea what you want to do, you'll probably end up more dedicated and do better.
yeah, my friend told me if i took a year off id never go back to college My friend and lead of band wants us to tour the college circuit. Maybe if we become famous, i wont need to go back
well, i didn't take a year off. i didnt' even think about taking a year off after senior year in high school...but sophomore year in college i fucked up my GPA and i was really considering taking a year off or not going back or going to a community college. i took the summer to really look deep inside to see if i really wanted to stay. it took me about 3/4 of my summer to finally decide that i'm gonna go back to school, the same school i've been going to. i put a lot of thought into it and i came back and i'm doing really well in my classes so far. if i were you, i'd really really think about it; talk to a lot of people that have experience with going to college, taking a year off, people who've had trouble with school, teachers...i got advice from so many people, but ultimately, it was my decision and ultimately its your decision on what to do.
i would just do it now and finish it and get it over with. Get a start so you dont have it hanging over your head... this taking a year off stuff i dont understand...
True. I went right to college after high school, but after my junior year I decided to take some time off. I wasn't liking my (hastilly) chosen major, and didn't have a backup...I have no idea what I want to do. Well, it was going to be one year, but here I am, missing a second. It's very likely that I will never go back (kinda hated it anyways). Having no direction does not help...
its not a bad idea, especially if your not sure what to study. I just gradded high school and am taking a year off too. Like someone mentioned in a previous reply, i have been told by a lot of college friends and older people that they wish they had taken a year off after high school. Your best bet with the 'rents is to convince them that your doing something productive. I'm moving out to CO to work at a ski resort in a few months (that takes care of 5 months outta the year), what are you thinking about doing with your year off?
working at a dead end job at a pet supplies store. So basically, nothing useful. But, there's no point paying tons of money for classes when I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I'm also thinking about doing a cross country bicycle ride, so I don't want to go get a more permanant job then have to leave it. My dream is to only work enough to eat and enjoy myself (why else should we work?) but I'm not sure if that will pan out.
I see...go for the bike riding . Id like to know, when people travel cross country, where do they sleep and what do they do for fun? anything and everything?
well, when i did the cross country bike trip, we either slept outside (park, camp grounds, etc), some people were nice enough to let us stay in there house or on there property, or sometimes we stayed in a hotel. the majority of the time, we spent sleeping outside in tents and most of the time it wasn't on a campground. for fun, on days off went swimming, movies, went out to eat, did some tourist stuff, chopped wood on a ranch...did a lot of stuff.
Great idea taking a year or even if it's more then that too. I have three kids-two of my sons are in College. I told both of them to hit the road and back pack thru Europe BEFORE they go to College. They both think i'm crazy. My daughter who is 16 will though-she is more like her Dad. It's important to start College with a clear head. Everyone has a great adventure at your age-Just don't make that adventure being in the Army or whatever. Go to sunangels site and go do the peace walk next year! You will make friends with people all over the world too. Peace The Wiz
