I've been interested in a visit to Goa since I was 15 yrs old. Now that I'm older, I feel I have the means to get there. And I plan to stay there for a good 6 months. However, I'll be pretty much on a gypsy's budget...Which isnt much at all...Ballpark figure, ill arrive with about $3000...Is it possible to last 6 months on that kinda cash? Whats it like to get food there? Shelter? Is it possible to stroll up the beach and find a decent place to sleep under the stars for free? Are there groups of people in similar situations that i could possibly meet up with and share resources? Any good books to read on the subject of extremely tight budgeted travel? And what if i choose to stay beyond 6 months? Is that legal/safe/advisable???

Oh and I plan to leave anywhere between 7-12 months from now....I just have to save up the money in order to take that trip.....Would anyone seriously be willing to come with? This trip of mine isnt a FOR SURE kinda thing....Im just gauging the possibility of a trip out there for now...Once details become clearer to me, then i think i can develope an absolute timeframe...I just wanna see if, given the right circumstances, anyone else would want to go...Lemme know!

    THANX PEOPLE :)

I'm taking about £2,000 (about $4,000) for 4 months in India, 1 month in Thailand and 1 month in Cambodia!!

So $3,000 just for Goa alone will be plenty since you wont have any travel expenses and the like.

My friend says a general rule of thumb plan to spend about £300 (about $600) per month in India if you are travelling all over the country and want to live fairly comfortably...Though you can get by on less if you don't plan on moving about much and budget yourself (mid-range hotels, street vendors etc).

Buy a 'Rough Guide' book or a 'Lonely Planet' book. I'm sure i've seen a LP book dedicated solely to Goa in the local bookshop. Check amazon.

Thanx Peterness, u rock! I completely forgot about the LP books...Im definately gonna check it out. Im also interested in Cambodia and Thailand...But since i'm such a newbie to the whole world-travel thing, I think i'll concentrate on one place for now to test out my walking legs, u know? And i dont think im gonna be spending massive amounts of cash on places to stay....I'll sleep in a shanty if need be :) But yeah, thanx for the info

$3000 for 6 months India is no problem at all. You should be able to get by on about $10 a day, maybe $15 is you plan to drink a lot every day.
But you should not spend all your time in Goa, maybe a month or two and then explore the rest of India, it is more than worth it.

Food is extremely cheap and extremely good as are rooms. Get a bamboohut on, for example, Palolem beach for about $1-$2 a night.
It is possible to sleep on the beaches although I would not recommend doing that all the time. Find a cluster of palmtrees and put your hammock up. That is literally heavenly!

If you want to stay beyond 6 months just go to Nepal or so and get a visa renewal.

    Hope this helps,

    Bird.
