*bangs his head hard into a wall*

WHY OH WHY do people actually believe the civil war wasnt about slavery? Remember our country was divided into slave states and free states. They were bitterly divided over whether new states would be free or slave states. Yes, tariffs played a pivotal role, but to say that slavery was a 'side issue' is utterly false.

you mistake chattell slavery as the only or worst form . todays slavery or rental system has more aliienated labor and no responsibility on the exploiter ....slavery exists in bigger and meaner forms than 1860 ....and then there were 75 million white slaves in russia then , and they suffered more apon their emancipation as well

The 13th amendment did not erradicate slavery. It left the loophole that prisoners could be used as slaves. Shortly following that many laws were made that would seem exclusively to catch recent freed men and put them back into slavery.
As for todays US prison industry, it's eating more people and producing more goods and profits than ever before.

Open your eyes and see what has always been in front of you.

i adore the south and southerners. yeah, there's some assholes running around, but it's nothin' like new york or california (from experience, not TV). the food's better, the people are more real and eager to get to know you. not shallow. more fun to be around.

i suggest you read louis menand's book "The Metaphysical Club" if you have any interest whatsoever in civil war history. it isn't exclusively about the war, but rather chronicles the development of what is called American Pragmatism. in short, it's about the dramatic shift in the general way in which americans think about ideas. it covers in depth many luminous historical figures, but the main story is tied together by the lives of four of the most important gentlemen in terms of setting the intellectual direction of our nation: oliver wendell holmes, charles sanders pierce, william james, and john dewey. it includes excerpts from correspondence, speeches, and publications ranging from the beginning of the civil war to (iirc) about 1905, and deals very extensively with both biographical information about these men and the people that influenced them, as well as very well researched information about how the country behaved and thought on the whole at the time. louis menand's research must have been exhausting, because this is the single best book about history/philosophy i have EVER read, and includes a veritable shitload of archaic information i've not seen many other places at all. its not an easy book to read and quite long, but well worth it once you get to the end, and it is quite enlightening.

at any rate, the major causes of the civil war were economic disputes and the issue of states rights versus the union. the issue of slavery was not the reason for the majority of southern states to secede from the union, and secession, not slavery, was the cause of the USA declaring war on the CSA. those that DID believe strongly in abolition very rarely viewed black people as equals by any means whatsoever, but rather viewed the institution of slavery as wicked. the majority of the north's fighter's, however, really probably could have cared less about freeing the slaves - it was more about keeping the union in tact and establishing once and for all the rule of federal government over state. the union theoretically derives it's power from the will of all the people, and only the will of the whole union can dissolve it, so when there is disagreement and one region decides to secede, this is an unconstitutional and illegal establishment of a new country. the war was to repair and strengthen the country as a whole, not so that the north could force the south to give up slavery. after all, the entire economy of the country (and the status quo) depended on slavery, not just the slave states.

don't get me wrong, slavery was no small issue and DID play a major part in the war; however if you actually read period documents and go to the effort of trying to see how people actually felt about the issues back then, you'll see it was NOT the main cause of the civil war, but rather a side issue that simply came up because of its ties to other issues and the long running debate as to how the institution should be handled.

at any rate, i DO strongly suggest anyone read the Metaphysical Club. it covers everything from politics and economics of slavery to education to the development of darwinism to philosophy to art and literature, and involves the stories of many incredible individuals.

The south just pretended to lose to throw everyone else off, you see that guy driving around with a rebel flag and dixie playing, think hes a jerk, actually its a stern warning of things to come.

I say the only solution is start a different civil war before the south rises again. I say Sox fans aginst Yankees fans.

Slavery and states rights go hand in hand. Lets not forget that Southern states forced their will on northern states. The fugitive slave law required northern states to return runaway slaves to southern masters. this is a horrible violation of states rights. Also, the dred scott decision allowed southerners to bring slaves to northern states and keep them against anti slavery laws.

As for economic? How can we separate southern economy from slavery? We cant. Southern economy was largely based on slave labor. But as i've said, the tariffs were a big big reason for the civil war. But again, how can we separate southern economy from slavery?

I'm not going to argue that the North was righteous. They werent. Most didnt care for blacks, as you said. However, slavery was an essential cause for the civil war. Yes, the north didnt fight the war to free the slaves and be the super heroes. That doesnt mean the war wasn't about slavery though.

The south saw that its power was weakening and it decided to secede.

anyways, thanks for the heads up on the book

the textile mills on the merrimac river in mass. rested completely on the slave grown cotton ....and the work was more miserable and killed you quicker than the agro labor of producing cotton . at least the stupid slaves 'knew' they were slaves ....and workers that they were extremely exploited ,[without even the concomitant responsibility of their owners care and maintanance .] some fools call this thing we live under 'freedom ' ...ha ha ha ....the big lie !

Um hello, is anyone here 200 years old? No one here fought in the Civil War, no one here was a slave. I say remember the past so it doesn't happen again but let it go at the same time. Focus on the current war we are fighting right now that I think needs to end some time soon. Sorry if I offended anyone I just needed to vent.

So true! Also, in Manchester New Hampshire.
The young girls would be sent off to work in the Mills because the boys were kept home to work the fields. I lived in New Hampshire for many years and learned much about the Mills Very Dark past.
