Yeah, it's the national bird of New Zealand, and it's unique to New Zealand.. it's a national icon. When we use it in the context of people (and not the rad birds), it has the meaning of "New Zealander", or "fellow New Zealander".

It's not so much slang as it is a kind of idiom.

That doesn't quite fully explain it. There's a sense of pride of being a New Zealander when we use the term 'kiwi'. Or at least I like to think so.

BTW it isn't a stupid question at all :)

ONly if you think calling us Aussies, kiwis, is the done thing :D We may have similarities with our natures/accents (except thick kiwi) but we're also diverse from each other with a genuine respect. Aussies ans Kiwis have always had an affinity with each other and regularly buddy up overseas. But we're better at sport :p

ahahaha, that was awesome gloria. burn....

and yeah, i think there was some story with the soldiers in WWI having kiwi brand boot polish and they took to calling each other kiwis and then the name stuck and spread...

but that might just be urban legend.

In terms of the aussie and kiwi accent, a lot of foreigners get them confused.

It's actually quite easy to tell them apart though if you just pay attention to the nuances as I shall explain.

The Australian accent is nasal and annoying.

The New Zealand accent is whiny and irritating.

See? Quite simple and easy to tell them apart.

And fuck you, trickster. We won the Bledisloe Cup this year, we won the tri nations...

also, hello? Australia just lost the Ashes.

shit yeah bro. We also win when we are not taking on OZ - NZ also WON against the british/irish lions, Michael Cambell WON the US Open. and that's just sport.

Do your homework before you bandy around the insults...i'm quite happy to be insulted, but only if it's based in fact. :)

and vimal. oh my god, i was just drinking my water bottle when i read your post, i just laughed so hard water shot out my nose. oh dear.

Yeah we lost the Ashes, we were under strength. But give up on the Tri-Nations and Bledisloe. It's ONE sport you're talking about, you can have it. We have a heap more to play with.

That's enough for now. Don't like it if you wish, but we ARE said to be the best sporting nation in the world. We have more champions in more sports than any other country. Per sport per population, we would have won roughly over 450 gold medals, 330 silver and 250 bronze. (Meaning if we had the same population as China, Russia and US) They have hundreds of millions where we have 20 million, yet we are better. GO AUSSIE :D

Excuse me, but your netball team lost to the silver ferns in the latest trans-tasman netball fling.

Anyway, sport isn't everything. It's nice for a [quick] perv.

I meant we have been champs Mr Man Pants :D

But, i can't stand those chicks who only watch the footy for the guys in tight shorts (slaps head) How can you think about that when a great game is on.

ah trickster..yes, aussies do pretty well in sport. but that diesn't make your claim about kiwi sport -

Name all the things kiwis have won lately? Actually, you can name all the things in the last decade, it'll be the same length list.

any more true. it's kind of an outrageous claim actually.
we do win at stuff too yknow - rowing is another area we are strating to excell at, kayaking, cycling, triathalon...

and as you pointed out in another thread, aussie has far more people than NZ. So the fact that we can and do beat you with talent picked from a pool of 4 million (as opposed to the 20 million that you have) says somethign pretty cool.

plus, if you are so utterly wonderful, why dya have keep pinching kiwis? benji marshall for instance....

not to jump in on this great pissing match, but..no, sorry no :p

have you ever heard of the duel in the pool? It is a US-Australia swim tournament to decide who is the best swim team in the world. We crushed you the first time around and we won resoundly again this year(190-102) and won 18 of the 28 events.

as for the world cup in baseball? Erm, it is my understanding that the first one is beginning next year. There have been only 2 olympic champions(US and cuba 3x). Anyways, it wont actually matter, since all the best players play in MLB and i dont believe they'll be allowed to play..so its not like it means anything.

BTW,australia sent 482 athletes to athens and won 49 medals. The US sent 614 and won 103 medals. Per capita based statistics are for looooooooooooooooooosers...and small countries :p

    argh. this is so boring.
Trickster, honey, sweetheart, angelcakes, this IS a new zealand forum. its kinda dumb of you to come over here and trumpet about how amazing australia is cos frankly, we don't really care what you say, there's no way you can prove that oz is better then nz cos our minds don't bend that way.

Feel free to continue posting here, its real fun and stuff but perhaps this is one topic we should stay away from unless there's something really good to mock each other about (eg if Australia lost to New Zealand 257 - 2 in Netball or something equally ridiculous.). Otherwise, lets just agree to disagree, shall we?

We didn't nick Benji marshall, he played juniors in Sydney for god's sake. He grew up in Oz. I'm sure if he wanted to go back to NZ, he'd get offered anything he wants being the star he is.
