Does anyone know any good and informative books about the Beatles or about the Sixties? What do you recommand me to read?
I know what you mean. I had a terribly time getting my hands on anything sixties until I mastered the library catalogue. Anyway, The Ultimate Beatles Book is Beatles Anthology, as it was written by the Beatles. It has EVERYTHING Beatles. I would also recommend George Martin's book about the creation of Sgt. Pepper's (the album), or A Hard Day's Write, which has the background of every original Beatles song, as does Revolutions in the Head. As for '60s books...Erm, for mass imagery, Rose Coloured Sixties is good for that. This site actually has some really good book recommendations. I'd also recommend The Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test, by Tom Wolfe. I think I got the title right... I hope that helps.
John Lennon's books are good too, "In His Own Write" and "A Spaniard in the Works". You could also read "Skywriting By Word of Mouth", but I believe that was written in the '70s. "The Fountainhead" and other Ayn Rand books are rumored to have been "big in the '60s"... "Things We Said Today: Conversations With The Beatles" by Vrnda Giuliano is a good book--lots of facts and things, and much less expensive than Anthology. However, it was written and compiled by VRNDA GIULIANO and not the Beatles... Some other '60s books...(either written in the '60s or very popular then) "The Doors of Perception" by Aldous Huxley "Slaughter-House Five" by Kurt Vonnegut "Cat's Cradle" by Kurt Vonnegut "Steal This Book" by Abbie Hoffman (I believe this may have been written in the '70s...not sure...) "Be Here Now" by Ram Dass (1971) "Stranger in A Strange Land" by Robert Heinlein "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter S. Thompson (1971) there's tons of 'em out there...
there's a HUGE book in barnes and nobles that's all about the 60's called, of course, 'hippie'. im not sure who its by, but its got the most information on the 60's than any other book ive ever seen! i bought it a year ago and STILL haven't finished it!
The best book I have read about The Beatles is "A Day In The Life: The Music and Artistry of The Beatles" by Mark Hertsgaard. It is the best because it really focuses on the music and what it means. The Beatles http://jimcolyer.com/papers/entry?id=61
I have read the book Hippie which is by Barry Miles good stuff, indepth of what was a hippie, with music and everything through the years. Good books I have read the Sixties: Years of Hope, Days of Rage by Todd Gitlin as well as 1968 in America by Charles Kaiser. They are decent deals if you are interested in non-fiction accounts of what it was like and everything.
There is a book called "Many Years From Now"...it's a biography about Paul McCartney...also check out "A CellerFull Of Noise" by Brian Epstien or John Lennon one...I can't remember who wrote it.
beatles by a lars saabye christensen. it's a fiction novel about four boys who love the beatles, it takes place in Oslo(Norway) in the 1960s-70s.
If you are looking for a documentary on the Beatles and their coming up, "The Beatles" by Hunter Davies is really good. Davies was authorized to tell their story and had many interviews with them and their friends/family. You get a good picture of each of them individually, their past and their future hopes of the time... Check it out (it can be very very detailed at times though...)
