Do you notice similarities between these two bands? I think The Samshing Pumpkins are influenced by them a bit.

    huh? you are nuts.

first of all, the pumpkins dont even have a flute player...... second of all, the smashing pumpkins are not cheesy and lame either and disguise themselves as a heavy metal band to win academy awards.

if the pumpkins were influenced by anyone it would be cheap trick, or some chicago band

How can a great progressive band like The Smashing Pumpkins be compared to a shitty band like Cheap Trick? I think that The Smashing Pumpkins are more like Rush. They are were probably influenced a bit by Rush.

What the fuck are you talking about? The Smashing Pumpkins are shitty mallternative, not progrock. And stop hating on a respected power-pop act like Cheap Trick.

Actually, I think Cheap Trick's alright, but I didn't think they were respected. The Smashing Pumpkins are much greater musically and progressively than your beloved Cheap Trick.

I also think they're alright.. I never cited them as one of my favorite bands. But it'd do you well to read up on rock criticism, hear more music.. it sounds to me your entire sphere of musical knowledge revolves around some generic classic rock artists and some lower-level prog rock rejects.. That use "progressively" as a positive adjective (i like prog rock too.. but expand your horizons a bit) just screams "my perception is very limited and I have no idea what I'm talking about!"

I don't see similarities between Jethro Tull and The Smashing Pumpkins.
I don't see similarities between Rush and The Smashing Pumpkins.
    Sorry... but that's the truth!

From what i've listened to from The Smashing Pumpkins, I hear progressive rock done in a grunge style. I've heard amazing sounds from this band. I don't care if they are "malternative". Everything seems to revolve around the Beatles and Led Zeppelin in this forum! I love The Smashing Pumpkins, they are one of the best bands to appear after the 1970's.

You're the one that keeps this forum in the gutter with digging up the bottom of the past's barrell.. You're just as bad as the 15 year old kids who have never heard any music besides The Dead and The Doors.

I don't think that The Smashing Pumpkins are at the bottom of the barrell. They are as mainstream as Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin or Yes was. The Smashing Pumpkins wer emainstream because they were too good.

Where does this imaginary breed of teenager come from? That was just a random insult on good music.

hey, why dont you ask billy corgan yourself on what his influences were.......

well, let me just give you what allmusic.com says as their major influences.

    Queen
    The Cure
    David Bowie
    Black Sabbath
    Ric Ocasek
    Boston
    Thin Lizzy
    The Cars
    Van Halen
    Neil Young
    Styx
    My Bloody Valentine
    Jimi Hendrix
    Pink Floyd
    Jane's Addiction
    T. Rex
    Joy Division
    Big Star
    Cheap Trick
    Depeche Mode

hmmm I see cheap trick and styx in that list!! two chicago bands..... of course they were influenced by chicago bands, because billy corgan was from that area..... where is jethro tull, or any prog rock band??? ohh I guess styx and boston could be considered prog rock! ha. geez.

and why in the hell would you say that cheap trick is shitty..... they did that 70s show theme song. how could that be made by a shitty band??

I like The Doors and The Dead as much as the next guy.. but there is the type of teenager, often found on this site, who smokes weed a few times and listens to them and thinks "I'm a hippie!" It's good music, but a lot of people it's all they listen to because they think it's what they're supposed to listen to.. which just makes you another generic stereotype deluded into thinking you're somehow unique. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with listening to those bands.. I know I do.. but there is other, better music out there to be found which doesn't have all the subcultural dogma attached to it.

I was way out of line to compare the Smashing Pumpkins with Jethro Tull. Now I see it, I was listening to Queen yesterday and saw the similairites to the smashing pumpkins, as well as David Bowie. It is evident in the melodies and guitar playing style. The smashing Pumpkins seem most influenced by thew 70's bands. That's why I like them so much, they are influenced by a mixture of 70's music. They seem to be a type of glam style rock in a way, they are semi-progressive, more towards progressive pop perhaps? This seems to be the type I like to listen to a lot, it is not the traditional style of prog but more as a pop-prog style.
