People who do this often have borderline personality disorder. They continually are testing the friendship or love of everyone around them. They can be the most draining patients to take care of. The classic response is “we are not going to talk about that anymore - what else do you want to talk about" If the person can not be redirected you may have to give up their friendship. This is what they want you to do anyway - thereby proving once more to them that no one cares about them.

 

well thats a way more constructive comment than 'shoot them'...
I dont know about giving up on a friendship because of it but i agree that friends who need constant reassurance or have no feeling of self worth are draining... i dont have any advice... except maybe try to get them to seek help... but if they are hell bent on this self fullfilling phrophesy syndrome its going to be a test of your friendship
