God I love that song... Something I learned about it... A friend of mine gave me an old Guitar World magazine that he found from 2001 and let me have it-It was a Pink Floyd special and in it it said that that song was written by a bandmate (can't think of which one right now too stoned) but it was for Syd Barret after he left the band and shit... Just thought that was cool
Roger Waters and he were very close. What makes this song unusual is that it is one of the few that Waters let David Gilmore compose the music to. Usually Waters has his ideas set on how it would sound before they went to the studio. I'm sure this was a contibuting factor to Water's eventual departure from the band. http://utopia.knoware.nl/users/ptr/pfloyd/ Just one of the myriad of links for us Floyd Fans. An excellent band, with a fascinating history. Glad you are here
i hate how around the 2 minute mark the whole band kicks in. its too loud. the intro is better, when its just dave and his guitar. id like to find an acoustic version of that song...
My favorite lyrics from the song are: "Did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage".
I thought everyone knew what "wish you were here" was about. hell, the whole album is dedicated to syd barrett..... just take the acronym of shine on you crazy diamond...... SoYcD...... and you get SYD
^Hmm... I'm not sure that was intentiol though... But it is certain the album was about him.. the opening line "remember when you were young, you shone like the sun" it's just so... sad, but at the same time optomistic about him, if that sounds right... it's almost as if they were hoping it would help bring Syd back. He's not dead, but he's as good as. From what I have heard he lives like a robot, sits in front of the telly, only ever leaves his hous for fags, same time every day.
Damn...that's terrible man.. Yo Sheeprooter..you're crazy man Floyd or any good music really-never too loud
that whole albums groovy to heaven....i heard WYWH about 2 months ago for the first time, when pink floyd reunited for the Live 8 thing...and man, that song totally blew my mind....i love the melancholy feeling it gives you just listening to it...i wonder how the members of pink floyd feel when they play it...
^I guess sad... very sad, guilty that they didnt do enough maybe, yet they did all they could, man it's so sad, but that oes without sayin
Indeed, the whole Album was for Syd, but another intersting fact is during the actual recording of Shine On, Syd walked into the studio, and wanted to Jam, this was when he had shaved off all his body hair, and know one new who he was, they had'nt seen him for 7 or 8 years, and he was jumping up and down and brushing his teeth constantly...... which is kind of desturbing in a sad sort of way........ Anyway, everyone was crying and taking it very hard, and it was the last time any one of the band members actually talked to him........ Kind of weird that he shows up out of no where, with no communication with the band, during the recording of an album that is dedicated to him, ........Fate.... Karma?...... who knows
I love 'Wish You Were Here'... I wanna cry every time i hear it. It reminds me of someone very important to me.
"When the band you're in starts playing different tunes" Not referring to Wish You Were Here but ... That one was definately for Syd. But the different tunes was what made Floyd. It's sad Syd, and later Roger, had to leave, but alas we wouldn't have the Floyd we have now if they hadn't.
