Well, I need to make two grave markers for some very dearly loved pets who have passed on. Any ideas? I don't have a lot of money but I want it to be special, I want their names on it along with the years they lived. I want it to be durable and last a long time too. So far I am thinking, pour some cement into some square frames and then draw in it with a stick, but that's kinda crappy.. Then I got the idea to get some wooden letters and glue them backwards to the bottom of the frame, oil it up, pour in the cement, so that when we pop it out the letters would be impressed in it, better idea but a lot of trouble and still boring. I want something unique and special.
well, i was thinking along the same lines as you, sorta. instead of drawing in them with a stick, you could spell out the names by embedding those little glass marble thingies, like they use for mosiacs. they sell kits to make stepping stones, that sound kind of like what you are talking about. go to the craft store, and check them out. that way, even if you don't want to buy a kit, you'll get an idea of how to replicate it on your own.
I think that is a GREAT idea. Also, you could go to the thrift store and pick up a few colourful plates and break them up and use those (along with marble thingies for the names) to add a pretty design. I am really REALLY sorry that you have to make 2 grave markers My heart just breaks thinking about how you must be feeling. It's a very sweet, kind thing to do though and when my time comes that i have to bury one of my little furry ones i want to do something as special as this. Take care sweetie. peace barefootnikki A Poem for the Grieving... Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn's rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush, I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die... -Anonymous
i'm sooo sorry to hear that your pets have passed. my hound, molly, died a little over a year ago and i still think about her often. my family has lived on the same land for many years, so many animals have been buried, from dogs, to sheep, to pet birds. we've marked each one with a specially selected stone. but i think your idea of making personalized, special markers for your pets is a really nice idea. maybe you could get some plaster and pour it into a mold and paint the plaster (simliar to doing a fresco, i think...you could do a little research on the method or maybe someone here knows). i think it would be quite durable and lasting. you could even incorporate the other ideas of having glass and/or stone imbedded in the plaster and paint around it. you could do their names and paint little symbols or pictures that remind you of them. no matter what you end up doing, i'm sure it will be a very beautiful and special reminder of your pets.
a friend of mine buys/finds a sturdy statue that closely resembles his lost pet and then cements it over the grave of the pet. He then paints it in the color he/she sported. That way when he looks out in his yard he is always reminded of the good times he shared with them.
I don't know if this is a good idea... A friend of mine, her sister passed away, and she wanted to make something for the grave, in addition to the tomb stone... so she got a glass candle holder for a 10" high candle, and with glass paint, decorated it in her sister's favourite colour and painted her name on it... It was simple but really nice. She lights the candle whenever she goes to visit the grave, let it burn for an hour or so... and refills it with a new candle whenever the old one burns out.
