I have never done the shelter adoption thing before. But my dog is lonely and so I need to be able to make her feel good. so I want to adopt a shelter dog. my thing is that I have a totally perfect dog right now. I mean I say this but she truely is. My roommate the animal lover even claims he has not met such a well behavied animal before so now I wonder should I or should I not. please tell em what I could possibly be looking forward to in the furture, if I were to adopt a shelter dog Jeru
i dont get what youre trying to say really. what does your dog being so good have to do with another dog? are you worried that the other dog wont be well behaved? i just adopted a shelter do back in july. she's wonderful of course as any dog is. i am having trouble with her potty training but from my research small dogs are not very good with abstaining from peeing in the house. i'll deal....small price to pay for giving a homeless dog a chance at a great life. but with the enormous amount of dogs in shelters you can find just what you are looking for whatever that is. you can find out beforehand how well "behaved" they are or whatever and i suggest bringing your dog to the sheter for a meet and greet before you settle on a new dog. not all dogs get along so you'll want to test that out beforehand. shelter dogs are no different than any other dog with the exception that they have a history and sometimes (most times) it wasnt a pretty one. anyone who would just throw their dog over to a shelter must not care that much about them in the first place. but trust me, these dogs KNOW they are being given a new life, and they are grateful! google petfinder and that site can hook you up with the shelters nearest you and you can browse to see what dogs they have waiting on a home. let us know what happens~
Elle, that is exactly what I was getting at. I am worried about the past of the dog. what the hell had happened to it. My friend adopted a sheter dude last year and he was 3 every single time she has tried to sweep he has freaked out and pissed him self and such, so we figure he had been beat with a broom. he also hates skirts and does the same kind of behavior. this is the only shelter dog I know. thats why I asked
well you can alway ask for a history "report" from the ppl there at the shelter. not all the dogs were abused...some just given up after the owners had to move or somthing. again, theres SO MANY that you can really take your time and find a dog you think will fit in well. the dog i adopted, lily, i asked what her history was and they didnt know as she was found in the drop box with no note. she doesnt seem to have been abused but i believe she was spanked (same as abuse IMO) since in the beginning when i would tell her NO she would cower as if she was afraid i was going to hit her. but she figured out quickley that spankings dont happen around here so now when i tell her no to somthing she promptly ignores me anyway, im always checking out the petfinder spca sites and alot the dogs come with a picture and a description and usually if they know of a past abuse they will mention it in the description...like "bailey was in an abusive home and will need extra special care and patience to overcome some issues".....etc.
I agree with Elle. The shelters will tell you the history of the animal. I adopted my cat from a shelter, and they told me what they knew of this life before I signed the papers. Usually, if you are kind and patient, even a dog that was from an abusive home will come to trust you, your home and your intentions. My friend had a dog that would freak out everytime a male raised his voice. After awhile though, the dog realized that we wouldn't let anyone hurt him and became one of the most loyal, loving and gentle dogs I've ever met.
