I don't any more, but I used to have some nice concealable knives. And once I'm off of my papers I'll be getting either a Glock 9mm or a .50 Desert Eagle. Can't decide.... I've shot 9mm's before, but I don't know how well I'd handle a .50 hand gun......

A 55 Magnum? I have never heard of a handgun larger than a 50 cal. Your husband must have a wrist like a leg if he does much shooting with that kind of cannon. Just out of curiosity who makes the 55. I would like to check their site and see what one looks like.

I fired a 45 in the service and concluded that I should use it as a club if I ever had to. Could not hit the side of a barn if I had been standing inside. Glad I was a medic otherwise I probably would have shot myself.

same here... having my knife made me nervous, but it was more of a last defence sort of thing, like if the person was much larger and on top of me and stuff... but yeah, stabbing someone makes me nervous. maybe i should buy some mace now

You made a great point the fact is we can make a weapons out of almost anything and in this modern world even a fire extinguisher can be used as a weapon . Our hands and feet and teeth are our last resort weapons and they were also our first = and have kill millions in the past.

i have a pair of wooden knuckles. sounds lame but theyre vicious. I like em because they cant be taken away from you ie twisted out of your hand, and if necessary i can royally mess someone up (badly smashed face, broken ribs, etc.) without having to worry too much about killing them. basically just a score evener for the roid monkeys in my town. I got worked last summer - hence the plans. I take them with me whenever im out at night in a new place.

Like it's been mentioned, unless you are trained to use a weapon like a knife or club it is most likely going to be used against you. That's what is good about guns. I would say the best weapon for home defense to be used by the average person is a shotgun. You just point and shoot. It's even really easy to miss your target with a handgun... especially if you are freaking out because someone is in your house, and it's dark.

I don't advocate violence at all. I have had to fight in my life when I had no choice, but I have also diffused situations. When I studied martial arts, there was as much emphasis on peace and improving humanity as there was on fighting. But if a person comes into my house (especially if I have a family someday), it will be the last thing they do.

I see elderly people walking around here with sticks all the time. Kinda makes me laugh. Not like canes or walking sticks, more like 3 foot sawed off broom handles. It's nice to feel safe I guess.

i dont currently live in the nicest area in the world, though its not really bad at all....but....there is some unsavory stuff that happens in my town once in a while, so yes, i do have a couple of small things around the place. of course i've got the normal butcher knives and whatnot in the kitchen, but thats not gonna do much for me. i usually sleep downstairs on the couch, and there is usually a large kitchen knife (or at least a really sharp steak knife) in the room with me somewhere, from having used it to prepare/serve food earlier, just because i brought it in there, or if it was a steak knife because i was using it to eat or to tailor blunts. in my bedroom, however, i have a pretty good wooden club (square shaped except the handle, and lightweight....exceedingly easy to whip it about VERY quickly with a lot of force, and i'm confident i could beat someone senseless pretty quickly with it if they happen to be unarmed) near my bed, just for peace of mind. my apartment doors only have a single deadbolt, and if i forget one is unlocked anyone could just walk in. the windows are old and shitty, and one doesnt even lock anymore. so yeah, considering all this, i've got a few things, but nothing big or really even too very useful against an armed intruder. its more for the slight comfort i get from having things laying around near me than for actual use.

i have a shitty lockblade knife with a thumb tab so that it can be flicked open extremely fast. its not huge, and can easily fit in my pocket. it also doesnt hold an edge very well, and is pretty much useless for most tasks, but if i'm in a really bad area or feel really uneasy, it DOES have a sharp point and could easily be used to stab at an attacker.

a knife is a very intimate weapon, and you'd have to be pretty close to the person to use it, and you'd feel the same, possibly more, resistance and toughness as you would cutting through raw meat, so you'd have to use a lot of brutal force and REALLY want to get the job done if you use a knife on somebody. plus the gore factor is a major deterrant from actually using such a weapon, for me anyhow.

i also probably would not use a weapon against an equally or more heavily armed intruder or attacker unless i felt my life would definitely be taken if i didnt do something about it, because if i'm going to use a weapon in self defense, i'm not going to stop short of knocking the person out in the case of a blunt object or killing them in the case of a knife. if someone pulls a knife or gun on you, thats a sign they MAY be willing to kill you. if you then hurt THEM with a knife or gun, you MUST kill them if you can't safely disarm them, because if you simply wound their arm or leg or whatever, then you've just injured them and made them mad, and it will only escalate the problem. i'd have adrenaline pumping, but so would they, and such a wound would likely merely scare and anger them. they don't know whats in my head any more than i know whats in there's. they may not have any intention of hurting me just because they have a weapon, it may be just to scare me. but if i retaliate with a knife or something, then they don't know i'm not going to try to kill THEM. then we're fighting to the death because each is concerned merely with self preservation. in most cases weapons only make the problem worse, because most burglaries or robberies do NOT end in a death, and the crook has no intention of doing physical harm in most cases.

so yes, it comforts me a little to know that if i were in a life or death situation, yes, there are a few things here or there that i could use to get at least some kind of advantage over being unarmed, however i'm very unlikely to use them anyway. from a rational standpoint, in most cases i'd have a much better chance of surviving if i DONT grab for a knife or bottle or club or something than if i do.
