A toast to the queen of the blues. At long last, she is begining to get the recognition and respect she deserves as one of the all time greats.

Her "Kozmic Blues" album is very dark and depressing.

I have had a high opinion of her for a many years. BTW anyone notice that people in rock music who have a name beginning with J have a ower life expectancy? Eg Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones and Janis Joplin?

I was 21 and very high in San Francisco everyday at that time-Her; Jimi Hendrix' and Jim Morrison all left us that year-all the same year -all the same age and-all the same lifestyle; exploratory; and on the edge-being young can sometimes be dangerous-I used to pay 3 bucks to see all of them-when they passed-I 'm sure I wasn't the only person to check out my lifestyle!-To have them die so young was a shock and for me a learning tool-I slowed way down!-Goodby Pearl-Honey; You were the best then and ever since-Thanks for great music you and Big Brother played-ya kept The City rockin!

Water Baby-You're right about Kozmic Blues album-By the time she had recorded that; she was deep into heroin-which eventually killed her-she was in my opinion the happiest and at her best when she was still with Big Brother and the Holding Co.-playin in Golden Gate Park on a sunny weekend for free-!everybody dancin and Janice belting out Piece Of My Heart- with the mike in one hand and a bottle of Southern Comfort in the other-good times fer sure-she was on fire!-Jumpin up and down-Wild!

Thanks for those two posts, Robspace2. :) I'm sure I don't need to tell you how lucky you were to have been there at those times! I never saw Janis Joplin, but her recordings are awesome enough! Yeah, I agree that the few biographies I've read paint the same picture. Although Big Bro were - IMO, unfairly - slated by the staff at Rolling Stone, there was something magical, yet tangible about the Big Brother recordings and performances. Ball and Chain at Monterrey Pop, is one of the best performances by anyone, anywhere, and much more enjoyable than the versions by the Kozmic Blues Band or the Full Tilt Boogie Band, lauded as far superior musicians than Big Bro.

Janis was ALWAYS awesome and put everything she had into her performance, BUT it was sad to see her in Festival Express; she LOOKED worn out, compared to the pictures taken of her just as she'd joined Big Bro, fresh faced and smiling in Golden Gate Park. I would happily remove, by hand, all the intestines of the scum dealer who sold her the heroin that killed her, that night in LA.

Hippies went nuts around 1969 and 1970, that's why in the early 70's things were so fucked and the music got more depressing. The fashion of the 70's just shows how fucked up that decade was.

You have to wonder where somone like Janis would be today. She wouldn't have been able to continue at that kind of pace and energy no matter what. Maybe should would have went into something like jazz or a genre that's a little slower. I've never heard anyone in rock, blues, or jazz that had the energy and emotions she did.

Silver-exactely-the reason most people liked her first group was because that is where she was completely wild and free and just great to watch-She had a ton of energy on stage and was laughing and smiling alot and she was just one of us- none of this rock star crap-she would walk around town or drive around in a multi day-glo colored Porshe that you could see comin for miles!-Technically; I suppose you could say her next two groups were better; but the live feel of it was gone-She once had a drinkin contest with Jim Morrison-she won-he passed out!-just a fun lady to watch work!-and the love and respect went both ways-Shaggy-Your right about that pace-she would have slowed down eventually-everybody does-unfortunately some wait too long-I have lost alot of friends over the years from substance abuse-It all comes down to the question and the choice-life or death--and when to take the finger off the self destruct button-Like I said-When Janis-Jimi and Jim all left us-it was a wakeup call-
