Has anyone heard Yngwie Malmsteen's venture into classical music? I think it's really interesting, the '80s guitar style in conjunction with a classical genre.

    What say you?

Absolutely cool, Bocks! The "Trilogy" album is the most brilliant example for what you say! It's a great mixing of hard rock music with classical influences.

I think it's pretty cool to have that amount of skill, but in the end it just sounds like wanking around to me. A heavily overdriven guitar just doesn't have the same definition/variation in tone as a violin.

I agree, just with S&M of Metallica. It just doesn't sound right to me. But there are rock/metal artists who mix classical parts quite well. Therion for example.

I agree with some of you about electric guitar not mixing with classical music, but I like that he went out and did something different. Maybe it doesn't sound right because we're used to those violin sounds (which are lovely, yes).

I totally agree, he did something original and cool (I have a few tracks of his), but it's just not really something I could listen to more than a few times. Rhandy Rhoads (sp?) really got that movement going I think, he was actually a classically trained guitarist.

his speed is amazing, and he has great skills, but he always seemed to lack feeling in his playing. His cover of Spanish Castle Magic was pretty bad, but he does the classical thing pretty well.

I saw Malmsteen live years ago, opening for Maiden. Good show, hes a great player for guitar players to watch!

When I first heard him, I was taken aback by his speed, but I have since learned that speed doesn't mean quality. It's still pretty amazing listening to him playing, however.

Listen behind the western adaptations that he tried to do to get into the western market... HEAR his soul ;)

omfg i hate yngwie malmsteen he sucks he has no soul, i mean it takes soul to strum 4 chords like oasis does but not to play classical music

and he plays so fast that it sounds like a drill, i mean for awhile i tried to learn some of his stuff but it sounded so bad that i just went back to playing oasis. :sunglasse
i mean when u do the up and down picking thing its bound to sound choppy rite?

Correction: you hate his music. To each his own. An objective opinion is appreciated.

No Einstein, it's called "alternate picking"... and it has been around for centuries, in several genres of music. There is more to guitar than just downstrokes, just a good, simple chord strumming pattern recquires a good mix of both upstrokes and downstrokes. As for faster lead stuff being "bound to sound choppy..." Well yes, if you have a poor picking technique, like you obviously do I'm assuming.

As for those of you who don't think classical scales sound good on an electric guitar, to each his/her own. Personally, I love the way it sounds. One of the big secrets to making fast-picked stuff like that sound good is to the neck pickup instead of the bridge pickup. Of course, even more important to making it sound good is TONS of practice.

Question: why do you bother posting in forums if all you do is insult other posters?
