i have never heard of these guys before, but i think they are a jam band...but anyhow, they are coming to my town soon and i was wondering if it was worth it to see them live.

and also, if you could suggest some of their best songs, i would appreciate it greatly.

They're like a... progressive bluegrass jam band thing.

It's definately worth seeing. They're frickin righteous, man. It's like... Jeff Austin. He's a damn good mandolin player.

Jeff's newbie mando player advice: play fast and play loud.
Yes YMSB is an amazing band.
if you are determined to buy albums, get the Mountain Tracks ones. I was present for 1 and 2 (colorado part).

yes YMSB is a jam band!!! They are frickin amazing live!!! I would highly recommend seeing them, it will blow you away. Sometimes they play more traditional style bluegrass tunes, and other times they rock the joint. They can jam on one song for at least a half hour. Try em out, see if you like em.
I really hope that you do!!

Yonder mtn is a bluegrass band! With hippie tendencies lets leave it at that :) And.....I think the term Jamband is sooooooo generic, We need to come up with a new term! because to call Yonder mountain string band a jam band Noooooo siree! Yonder mtn .......I would recommend mountain tracks, Or archive.org to download some shows.......
Geez.......Recommend some songs..... Any and all of them are incredible !

A jam band describes bands, often psychedelic rock bands, whose concerts largely consist of improvisations in the model of the Grateful Dead. The term likely derives from the jam sessions of jazz musicians, though those sessions tended to be completely free of constraints, whereas bands in the jam scene tend to improvise around specific songs, often segueing smoothly between songs.

Although first associated with psychedelic rock, jam bands can come from various music traditions, including funk, progressive bluegrass, blues, country, rock, folk and jazz.

Jam bands sometimes improvise around the chord progressions of pre-composed songs, varying them by tempo or other dimensions. Jam bands sometimes improvise around the chord progressions of pre-composed songs, varying them by tempo or other dimensions. This is arguably a progression of the guitar solo, a feature of traditional rock music. Some jam bands only perform this type of jamming, hardly ever heading into uncharted territory. Others completely improvise the notes, tempo and structure of the music, distinguished only from jam sessions perhaps by the size and activity of the audience.

    ***taken from wikipedia.org***

YMSB falls under the category of progressive bluegrass, therefore they are considered a jam band.

I agree that the term "jam band" is too generic, but following the basic structure of jam music mentioned above, I believe that YMSB is definitely a jam band. They jam forever on some songs, and often flow into other songs.

Grateful Dead, the model for which most bands follow in their "jam bandness" played lots of country and bluegrass as well.

in fact, they are often considered "jam grass", which perhaps is a more appropriate name?

I think its horse shit when people say the grateful dead or the allman brothers are the fathers of the jam band music-i mean, the fathers of this scene are count basie, duke ellington, they were the ones who invented it, we just adapted it to a rock and roll vein, it serves us quite well, I am happy to have been able to do that, that helped to bring about the whole jam band scene, really though, that m.m. of stating, a theme, then taking it for a little walk in the woods, in an improvisational manner, that started a lifetime or 2 before i was born- Bob weir
