Stereotyping Hippies is Wrong!

Recently my mother had a friend of hers over....and my mother was telling her about how I'm becoming a hippy somehow.....and how I'm obsessed with Led Zeppelin and everything related to music, and hippy topics..(such as politics and so on and so on). Then her friend turns to me and says "You arent a Hippy!" and I said "Well that depends on how you define Hippy" and she says "Well, you arent dirty and you don't smell, and you don't do drugs....."

This-in my opinion- PISSES me off SO much! You can't just tell someone what they are and aren't without even knowing anything! People have done this so much! My sister tells me everyday to stop listening to Rock and Roll, because she thinks that I'm going to start doing drugs..... Yes, I have changed becuase of what I listen to and what people I talk to and get together with, but that doesnt mean that I'm going to start smoking! I just wish she'd stop! Everyday...CONSTANTLY! It's all I hear... "Joanna! You BETTER NOT start doing DRUGS!!!!" It's so annoying!

Can anyone relate at all??

Whenever someone tells me I'm not a hippie, I smoke so much pot I can't even remember what they said.

i would beg to differ. i true 'hippy' at heart would never lose control of his/her temper. its science.

yeah, i can relate. when i started listenin to good music and dressin in bellbottoms and "hippie" styled shirts, my mom and dad went through my room all the time, lookin for weed, i guess. and mom would always ask me if i was on drugs and shit. it's annoying.

stereotypes are soooooo annoying.
my friend melissa and i were talking once and she said "i asked my mom if all hippies did drugs and she said no and it surprised me"
then i was talking to my friend allison later and i said "melissa asked her mom if all hippies did drugs..." and before i could finish, allison was like "duh, of course they do" i wanted to scream and go off on her, but i just stopped my story there.

 

yeah, i call myself a hippie when people say "hey, laina, are you gothic?" and i say, "no, i'm a hippie" then they're like "wtf? hippies don't wear black! they're happy and cheerful and yay!"
it's funny to confuse people.
anyway...

 

Being typed as you put is is a on going issue in every culture, weather ones a gear head for being into cars or one being callled a betty crocker cause she cooks alot.


Its no different than a female be typed as a bitch or ****, we were all made to be different but we all are one thing or another.

Even the ones who keep to themselves are termed loners....

 

yes I can agree with you. I have always you know believed in the 'hippie' ways and everything like but I was you know not an adult yet and people tried and changed my views so when I turned of age I went nuts on them and they hate it everyday but I don't care because they can believe what they want and I will follow my own path and do what I want because it is my life. That is the way you have to look at it is your life you do what you want to do because no one can live it but you.

 

Growing up and being raised to be conservative christian, I've obviously been stereotyped for my (uhoh) liberal beliefs/how i dress/my random rants, and what not-- and of course Mom has a growing curiosity of whether or not I do drugs, blahblahblah etcetc.. i don't take it to heart. i know she means well. D=
