this is Huddie: isn't he the cutest lil thing?? he's already escaped 2x already, so we're building him his own home this week. peace. LP
He is beautiful! Where did you get the name from and how is it pronounced? Very interesting. If totem animals do exist, I believe that mine is a turtle, so of course I am very fond of turtles.
thanks, he is cute. and getting big! i posted that on oct 10, and he's way bigger, now! he's only a baby. assuming he's male (hard to tell) his shell will grow to 12 inches. if i am unfortute enough for her to be female, she'll grow to 18 inches! we got him from our aquarium store, who told us that he was fully aquatic and never needed to come out of the water. since my last post, we put him in his own little tank with dry land for him to chill on, and he spends half his time out of the water. so they were wrong. his name is Huddie, pronounced just how it looks, rhymes with muddy. He's named after Huddie Ledbetter, aka Leadbelly, an old jazz dude. he wrote the songs "where did you sleep last night"(nirvana's unplugged cover is the better-known version), and "rock island line" (johnny cash re-did it). sorry for the long post, but i think i answered all your questions. i just tried to take him out to take another picture of him on my hand, but he wants nothing to do with it. he just kept biting my fingers and jumping off my hand. so when i do get another pic, i'll post it. lol peace. LP
I looked it up since I too thought it was weird they told you he didn't need any dry place, I think most of them prefer having some dry spot available to sit, even if they *can* survive under water... looks like he's a spiny soft shell, here's some info on them: http://www.centralpets.com/animals/reptiles/turtles/tur5956.html Have you seen him 'snorkel' with that long nose of his yet? That has to be a cool sight!
well, we've learned a lot about Huddie since my first post here. most importantly: he NEEDS dry land; and he's gonna get FREAKING HUGE. in these photos he's in a 20 gallon long tank. my bf built him the little rock bridge to chill on. TONIGHT, though, he goes in his new 75 gallon tank. my apartment is starting to look like a public aquarium...... well, here's Huddie! peace, hippies! LP
That is a great turtle! I had one (two actually, but the first died a week after we got him, so I took him back and got another one for free) named Ernest when I was 10. I love turtles, they're awesome!
check your laws. It might be illegal for you to keep him captive without a license. If you get caught, the fines can be really steep.
aaawww he's really cute, i love the nose. i have a turtle called tattoo (cus his skin looks like its painted on) he's a florida yellow bellied slider. when i first got him he was really shy & would hide away every time i went near the tank but he soon came out of his shell (not literally, hehe). evertime i walk in the room he flaps in the water wanting to come out the tank. turtles are megga intelegent, he knows when me & my partner & talking to him & what were saying etc. and he bosses the cat (pisces) about something rotten, oh tattoo is defo in charge, pisces will follow tattoo about, pisces will sit watching him & tattoo will go to bite his tail, little bleader & i thought it would be the other way round. not the best pic, but this his him when he was real small & colourful. again not the best picture, pisces sat on the tank watching tattoo.
