Question about this stuff. Where do most people stand when it comes to Gelatin and being lacto-ovo vegetarian (not vegan). The reason why i'm asking is because, if Gelatin is not allowed in the lacto-ovo vegetarian diet wouldn't it be the same for white sugar?
I don't eat either. I'm vegan though. Most regular vegetarians don't eat gelatin, but they usually eat white sugar. What you're saying makes sense though. But regular (lacto-ovo) vegetarians usually eat a lot of things that technically aren't vegetarian anyway. Like cheese: most cheeses contain rennet, which is the scrapings of calve's stomach linings. So most cheese isn't really vegetarian either. Plus, most milk contains pus, because of the leukemia problems of cows in factory farms. Pus cells are body cells, so technically that's not vegetarian, you would think. So lacto-ovo vegetarianism is kind of a loose term it seems. Only veganism makies sense to me, personally.
i think theres a lot of the "i don't eat meat" vegetarians that'll still eat gelatin products. i know a few. i don't consider them vegetarian, even if they think that they are. ... sooooooooooooooooooo close.. but no
yea ophelia i agree with you there. Because the more and more i think about it it just sounds more contradictory. How can someone say eating gelatin is wrong, then turn around and eat any bleached food product? i guess really the only way to be vegetarian is in a sense become vegan. Like it just seems dumb that some people would be against gelatin, but then turn around and eat somthing that has been bleached with animal bones. (I'm asking this because someone was telling me a direct experience that happened, they were yelled at for eating some gummy bears, but that person was sitting eating a snickers chocolate bar)
Sugar is a plant substance, so um.. yeah, it's vegetarian. I don't eat gelatine though, as it is made from dead animals. Remember, not all sugar, or even most, is made with bone char.
Since gelatin is usually derived from animals, it's not vegetarian. White sugar, however, is definitely vegetarian, it's pretty much just the evaporated juice of the sugar cane plant.

animal-derived gelatin? No. Rennet cheese? no (i'm lacto only) Hain makes a great agar-based gel product called superfruits. You can, of course, get agar flakes and do your own with fruit juice, but a packet around for cravings is good. (I live in gelled agar when I get bad allergies and a really sore throat). as for sugar, bone char is used in a mediocre percentage. Kind of depends on origin. One can get beet sugar, or Florida crystals (TM). Add honey to this mix. I eat very little honey, and it is all local. I've been part of harvest and I know very very few bees die during harvest AT THIS LOCATION. She encourages a swarm to a new box first. Only once have we found more than about 10 in the hive after that. all were ill from a bacteria, it turned out. She lost a large percentage over that winter to the bacteria. Someone else dependent upon a store to get honey just won't be comfortable with the methods. It's all personal choice, and there are no absolutes. It is impossible to be 100 percent vegan. it is possible to do all you can and make your informed choices and gently educate. It works ever so much better than screaming. although, sometimes it can make you scream! 8) look to kosher gummy bears. Read the label. Usually agar. I get a great sour version at the local main line grocery. Rennetless smoked mozzarella at Whole Foods/ Wild Oats.
i don't eat gelatin and use raw sugar. yuck. typically i'm lacto-vegetarian with some limited ovo (i live in the middle of all meat land).
I don't eat geletin either, after the first week i was a veggie, i almost did but luckily my friend did stop me and told me, so i gave him the sweets, although i felt very guilty for buying them in the first place peace and love michael x
I was happily using altoids until I found out they have gelatin in them. I bought raw sugar just to be safe. I really don't want touse things that are made with or claified with animal products. I eat eggs occasionally and I use milk in cooking but that's all.
