That was such a good movie, so moving, and Charlize Theron's performance was fucking brilliant, she truely deserved an Oscar for it, she was AMAZING. Really harsh story though, I feel so sorry for Aileen Wuornos (sp?), that woman didn't deserve to die, I remember hearing about it on TV 2 years ago, people were protesting.. it was so unfair. The movie was one of the best I've ever seen

Btw random question, that song (extremely known song) playing during the lesbian sex with Christina Ricci.. what is it called again?

I agree Penny. This was an excellent film, very well made with great performances.

The song is called, Crimson and Clover, I believe that is the one you are referring to? I like that song.

I think it was a film designed to raise social conscience. Whilst I am resolutely against the death penalty, there is a strong case for it in people's lust for revenge, an 'eye for an eye'. Surely, however, the essence of a civilized country is to shun all forms of violence, never mind participating in it.

Murder is the most hineous crime. The life of a loved one can never be compensated. There is no return. There is always a vacancy. So on what ethical grounds does society itself decide on a convict's death? When the majority, or those in government decide on a person's fate it is called execution. Execution is one of those many words which essentially describe the same thing, ie. affection=love, passed away=died. But the basis of the word execution still leads to the same conclusion: the deliberate death of another human being, by another human being's action. And all the public's hate, guilt and even indifference is capsuled within that soporific word designed to justify an immoral decision by appealing to the masses. Execution is intself murder. The fact that is written in the law of some countries shows that though we're surrounded by wonderful technology, we've progressed very little as an elightened race. The fact that it is supported in countries which call themselves a democracy is embarassing and tragic.

Whatever the true case of Monster (and the circumstances of her life can't be taken into light account) there are institutions which house criminals. They're known as prisons. OK, forgive the sarcasm. America has a problem with crime. That is no secret. But it also has a huge population and ever-present problems.

Monster's problems which warped her own sense of morality are not an isolated case, but I doubt that a murderer is stopped by the fact that if he/she gets caught they will be "executed" themselves. That's like saying someone that smokes will give up ,because they're worried about cancer. They might give up, but a lot of smokers tend to think that it won't happen to them.

As a person I felt sorry for Monster, but no less than for her victims. Perhaps, the film will be best remembered for its attempt to raise our awareness within our communities. Maybe if we all cared a little bit beyond our ego and identified problems early on, then we can at least prevent some of the tragedies rather than extending them.

Lecture out. Even if you strongly disagree with my point, I honestly don't have a problem with it. Time will either make us better people, or destroy us.

    well said!!!
    and it needed saying!

i'd like to reiterate your point on REVENGE... monster, sought revenge for her pain, and the victims of her family sought revenge for theirs.. i'm sure this need for revenge began before 'monster' was born, and i think her story shows clearly that revenge is usless and only causes more pain which peple seek to avenge...
