Does anyone know anything at all about water pumps and piping? My husband has been trying to fix our pipes for days now and hasn't had any luck. We have a small holding tank for our water, and a pump to pump it into the bathroom. It either comes out the sink or the shower depending on which one we turn on. The first couple of times (we just moved in three months ago) we emptied the tank, we had to repipe the system because the pressure, caused by the pump, in the empty pipe, resulted in a leakage in the pipes. So we are repiping for the third time. Only this time, it won't work. The pump still runs, but no water comes out. Anyone know what the problem could be? I can post pictures if you think it will help.

    Thanks.

I'd really like to take a shower someday soon.

Most definetely not my area, but is the pump self priming, or are you priming it before you start it?

Um, I think so.....we have to pour water into the top of it. Then close the cap. I'm not entirely sure, but I think that's how Stephen was doing it. Is there some other way?

I dont know how to start a new forum but I think there should be one on alternative building. I've been looking 4 info on straw bale & seeled earth floors for 3 days & have come up empty handed every time.

pumps can be designed to draw water up reasonably high distances and then pump water along etc or be designed to draw water up small distances and then really pump water along and up etc. if you are using the wrong pump things may not work out. if the impellor is worn or has fallen off then you'll find the pump won't work much if at all, it will make the noise but not pump water. maybe you need to disconnect the pump and see if its actually pumping water at all using some hoses to draw and guide water in and out. maybe you've got a blockage. maybe the seal on the pump lid (if it has one) needs lubrication and its sucking air. check out the website offered by the other guy.

Well, today he took the pump apart and said that there was a rubber seal that had come out of place. He put it bck where it belonged and rebuilt the piping and primed it. It still is not working. It will put out a small amount of water and then quit. It does make noise and not really do anything.

He's going to put the check valve on the other direction. Does anyone know which way the arrow should point on the check valve? Is it the direction that the water will be flowing? That's what I think it is. He has it on the other direction. Also, he's been priming it while it is running. I told him to pour the water in to prime it while it's off, and then turn it on real quick after the priming has been done.

We've gotten it to work once while we've lived here. But can't remember what we did to make it work. Grrrrrr. No more running the thing while it's empty. Very bad.

I think that the arrow should point the way you want the water to go.
Is there an instruction manual for the priming?

    Also
http://www.woodworking.com/dcforum/dcboard.pl has a "home improvement" sub-board. I know that plumbing is not woodworking ("Now that I own a table saw, my neighbors think I know about plumbing."), but they are friendly folks who would direct you to good help if they can't give it themselves.
