joan. not that i don't love joni by the way. hey it's you john221! hi i love your sig goo goo barabajagal was his name now... yeah that sig makes me dance
You've got a point there man, I love the way some of her lyrics seem to tell stories that are so close to her own heart. But I suppose I'm just much more into Joan.
I'll have to go with Joni. She's such a great songwriter, and I like her voice slightly better than Joan's. It is more folk-sounding and a little less operatic. But I love "Sweet Sir Galahad."
Joan Baez covers more songs than she writes 'em. I saw her performance from the Isle of Wight festival where she did 'Let It Be'. Yes that 'Let It Be'. At Woodstock she just did old folk tunes, 'Joe Hill' and 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot' appear in the movie. That isn't a bad thing, it's just that I've never heard of Joni Mitchell doing an all Dylan cover album.
I love old folk tunes like the ones Joan does, those ancient Irish-Scottish-Appalachian ballads. But Joni . . . you can't listen to "Both Sides Now" without realizing her amazing ability to write a good tune. She's so original. Her tunings are insane--I know one song has her low E tuned to a C but like two octaves below or something. (And I personally didn't like Joan's Swing Low Sweet Chariot in the Woodstock movie . . . it doesn't surprise me that she didn't get much applause.)
I like both, but Joni has the tunes of genius. Joan has the heart and soul, and she's lasted well through the years. Joni's COURT AND SPARK as well as BLUE may give her the edge here.......
I gotta say though, Ladies Of The Canyon is just as a groundbreaking album as Blue, but is the near polar opposite. Ladies Of The Canyon has her rejoicing in her love with Graham Nash, whereas with Blue, she is depressed because of the breakup with Nash.
I, personally, have to say Joni, because I got into her music first, and Blue has pretty much always been with me. Still love Joan as well though
