I'm not trying to gross anyone out, but this is kind of bothering me, and we're all mature woman here, so here goes:

On the second day of my period, I often get diarrhea really bad. I mean, to the point where every 15 minutes I run to the bathroom. I have a very sensitive stomach, but this worries me. Is this normal? Hell, it this even healthy? Cause I've heard girls talk about cramps and all that related crappy stuff, but not about that. I always assumed that it was because it was gross, but I dunno...

i've always done that, too. i just consider it a cleansing time. with all the cramps going on in the region, who knows after a while what's cramping anymore? it just makes me drink a ton more water and gives me an excuse to take it easy for a day. it doesn't last long enough for me to become agitated over it. though if you've got it really really bad, ask your doctor.

I don't get diarrhea quite that bad, but bowel movements at that time of the month do tend to be a bit looser & yuckier... The main thing I notice is that, well, it has a specific smell at that time of the month -- like, before I was on the pill, I would know when I would be starting in the next day or so by that smell... Not that my shit doesn't stink at any other time of the month, but this is just awful!

dont worry about it, it seems like its normal.

I get really sick right before, and the day of my period. I get nauseus and I often throw up, terrible headaches, extremely tired, not to mention the emotional side of it :$ ,...etc... A lot of my friends get sick as well. It must be really annoying to run to the bathroom so much. Are you willing to talk to your gynocologist about it?

Womyn who have Irritable Bowel Syndrome usually have terrible flares when they have thier period.

I used to have horrible IBS. Some things that will help. AVOID Dairy products completely. I had to go to a GI specialist at one point and he says he would like to take ALL his IBS and Inflamatory Bowel disease patients off of dairy, as it is almost always a problem. He also takes his patients off of peanuts and shellfish, as foods like this are often hidden allergens which aggravate any bowel problems you have.

IBS can be controlled. I have been off of dairy for more than 12 years. My IBS is totally managable, I have only rare stomach pain and oddly enough, my other allergies, like to pollen and mold and animals are almost gone. Dairy aggravates everything. No human needs it to thrive and you are better off without it. It is almost a must to avoid it to be better with IBS.

It will take at least a month of NO dairy before you notice any improvement. It takes that long to get the Bovine Proteins out of your body. It may take a few years for your colon to heal totally, and you will probably always have occasional attacks. One of the "benefits" of IBS is that you simply can't overeat. The attacks which come with an over full stomach (which pushes food into your intestites where the pain begins) are too bad to allow you to eat too much.

A lot of people also feel better if they stay away from caffeine, too.

Make sure to keep yourself well hydrated with plain water during one of these attacks, or Pedialyte if you are really sick. Usually water, and nothing else to drink will be the best. Eat small meals, don't let your stomach get empty (especially around your period when you are prone to food craving and low blood sugar) and only eat enough to get about 3/4 full.

If it doesn't get better, see a doctor. There are some meds that can help. Bentyl is a good GI calmer which can help with the pain. It is usally not best to try to stop the runs, unless you have to be somewhere or are clinically dehydrated. I find my cramps from the runs are worse if I take Imodium or other medicine like this.

I was told that the chemicals which cause contractions in your uterus to push all the blood out leak into your gut and your intestines are effected by them. This is why it is so bad during your period. A good antiprostagladin, like Motrin or Aleve can help reduce the amount of these chemicals in your body.

I hope you feel better. DRINK A GLASS OF WATER, NOW!!!!

    Hugs and kisses

Just adding to the statistics, yes I get that problem too. I thought I was weird, really glad to know I'm not the only one!

It hurts like hell and I can't tell the difference between diarrea cramps or menstrual cramps! One thing I do know that is that sometimes I appreciate having diarrea at that time, it seems to empty me out and take physical pressure off my insides which relieves cramping after that part is all over with.
