I want to go to Australia. You never hear about crazy shit going on there, unlike here in the US. Our country is fucked. It just seems that your country is content being out of the spotlight...and with nice beaches. You're lucky.

It was in Redfern and was last year i think. An aboriginal boy was killed while being chased by police for something. The aboriginal people were upset by his death and reacted against the police. While it's not one of the richest suburbs, it's not crime riddled. Most people would feel safe walking around, even at night. There is definetely a safer feeling here, rather than the states where you have guns everywhere. Even kmart? Our country is completely different. You have cops and metal detectors at your schools for christ's sake. We have more freedom down here in OZ and NZ. That said, we don't want a huge amount of people moving here. We like having 20 million, we don't want hundred's of millions.

i didnt have metal detectors at my school. I've been to schools in 3 different states. My niece/nephew dont have metal detectors at their school. My cousins in florida dont have metal detectors in their school. Yes, in *some* innercity places they have metal detectors. It is NOT the norm. Better safe than sorry though. Also, i went to school in new york city for 3 years. I'd feel safe walking around manhattan and some of the other buroughs at night too. Big Deal.

American stereotypes are probably the worst in the world. You cannot stereotype america AT all. The country is far too big.

And please, i'm willing to bet that my state(vermont) is as safe as any place in OZ. ANY. Heck, i've only seen guns on cops and in stores. We dont walk around with guns. Most guns in America are for hunting. For instance, of the 600k people in vermont, over 80k are hunters.

And right, you have more freedom. I'd love to see you prove that :p. Your country doesnt even have a bill of rights protecting your freedoms. Your government could easily violate your freedoms *legally*.

anyways: stereotypes suck. They cant be proven. They may make ya feel better, but they have little if any grounding in truth.

p.s. your country couldnt handle 100s of millions even if it wanted too.

pps. i was talking about that macquerie fields one..i know it happened this year since i was in NZ. Also, there is a second riot right after that over a sporting event too.

Well aren't we defensive. I was making a general statement that you do have metal detectors there, i didn't say every school. THAT isn't a sterotype, THAT is the truth?

course i'll be defensive. It is however a bit hypocritical. Some australian schools have used surveillance cameras and drug sniffing dogs. Not much better than metal detectors if you ask me.

Were you not defensive when you responded to mine?

BTW, its alright if Australia isnt 100% perfect. No place is :p

Oh please, there are cameras in old people's homes and at lawn bowls. But, i don't know of one school that has sniffer dogs. If there was a leakage maybe but apart from that, that's bullshit. I've lived in 4 states and have not seen that or heard of it. Metal detectors to find guns or knives is terrible and worse than a few cameras. I know Australia isn't perfect, but in terms of violence in schools and on the streets, Australia is far safer. That's my point and a proven one.

I bet the typical Australian doesn't know a handful of friends that died due to drugs or violence during their high school years. I do.

I'd rather have to walk through a metal detector than have my every move watched. Personal opinion, of course.

Again, you cant stereotype America. Is Australia safer than some small town in montana? doubtful. Is Australia safer than my hometown? Doubtful. Is Perth safer than Detroit? Hell yeah. American crime is NOT spread evenly throughout the country, so a blanket statement of "America is more dangerous" is extremely unfair.

Look, i'm not trying to say OZ is a bad place. It isnt. It is one of the best and safest places in the world. It is however, highly unfair to come off sounding like America is the only place that has problems. YOU have yours. We have OURS.

    And i'm done.

I never said Australia was safest. All i was saying is, if you look at drugs, violence, rapes, murders, school shootings, it is safer here than there. I never said that stuff doesn't exist here (except school shooting's don't) BUT in general, America is a more violent place and the chance of things happening there is more stark than here, simply because the culture is different. And your country is thought of in a more negative way. Why don't you get that this isn't a sterotype. I am not making this shit up. Look on the net, read a magazine or newspaper, watch American news broadcasts. It's obvious to everyone except those who don't want to see. Anyone who has studied sociology or society would have come across this.

    I'll try once more

Crime in America is NOT spread evenly throughout the country. To base your beliefs on all of America based on certain segements IS stereotyping.

    here are some statistics.

    Vermont Murders per 100k

    1.5

    Australia Murders per 100k

    NSW: 1.8
    VIC: 1.2
    QLD: 1.9
    WA: 1.5
    SA: 1.5
    TAS: 1.7
    NT: 8.7

    Australia overall: 1.6

So, Victoria is the only state safer than my own for not being murdered.

I couldnt find australian rape statistics per state, but overall rapes per 100k are as follows

    Australia: 74.23
    USA: 32.05

So, you're more likely to be raped in Australia than in America. Am i to take from this that Australian culture is more misogynistic than american culture? Are Australian men unable to control themselves? Will sociologists and magazines tell me this?

Maybe you'll understand what i'm trying to say: THIS IS ALL RELATIVE. You're more likely to be raped in the Bronx than you are in Western Australia, even though national statistics say otherwise!

When I was in grade 6 and had to change schools, the three siblings and myself were the only ones in the school that knew the Australian Anthem...There was one day when the teachers had to drum the words into us children...Primary school is a time that I would rather forget...I hated it.
