Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both wives lost their children while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head.

    Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln 's secretary was named Kennedy.
    Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.

    Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called ' Lincoln' made by 'Ford.'

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

    And here's the kicker...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe.

Creepy huh? Send this to as many people as you can, cause hey, this is one history lesson people don't mind reading

and the in Marilyn comment is in a version circulating
Other differences: Booth was shot in the back in the neck and lived for another three hours; Oswald was shot in the abdomen and died within minutes of his arrival at Parkland Hospital.

" A month before Lincoln was assassinated he was in Monroe, Maryland.
A month before Kennedy was assassinated he was in Marilyn Monroe.

This is a latter-day addition to the list and nothing more than a bit of salacious humor. Even as a humorous coincidence it fails the test, as Marilyn Monroe died well over a year before Kennedy's assassination. "

More similarities between Lincoln and Kennedy:

Lincoln proved a backwoods hick could become president; Kennedy proved a hedonistic Catholic could become president.

Both were viewed as charming if not elegant in their human foibles and eccentricities.

Both were largely forgiven for their disasterous legacies.

Both pulled their country into unnecessary and ruinous war.

Although, even if the snopes debunking is all true, it's one thing to have one or two coincidences...but isn't it a little different when you have a major list like that? Some, true, are dumb like the number of letters in a name, but still, it is kinda weird.

Both were assassinated by Southerners.(southerners have guns)

    Glad you asked...

I know we were told that the Civil War was necessary to free the slaves, in much the same way we are now told the invasion of Iraq is necessary to protect the world from Saddam Hussein and his supposed 'weapons of mass destruction', but both wars were really about economic and political control of important resources.

Abraham Lincoln himself admitted that were it not necessary to 'preserve the Union' (i.e. to preserve the U.S. government's power over the southern states), he would have been happy to leave slavery intact and allow it to die a natural death. Preserving his administration's economic, political and military power was Lincoln's chief aim, and, with his great skills of rhetoric and oratory, he was able to convince his constituents that preserving the centralized power of the government was the same as preserving democracy (a lie that continues to be promulgated today). It was Lincoln and the Civil War that transformed the United States from a peacable federation to a military superpower.

Yes, Abraham Lincoln did indeed free the slaves, but only when it was expedient to do so to further his political aims. I have heard it said that if Lincoln had not freed the slaves, Robert E. Lee would have freed them in his own way. Perhaps his way would not have led to a ruined and desperate South and a hundred years of lynchings, terror and segregation. Did we really 'have to destroy the South in order to save it'?

Prior to the Civil War, the United States were a loose federation of largely autonomous states. A careful reading of the constitution confirms this. The Civil War, despite what we were told, was nothing more than an unprovoked invasion of the independent southern states carried out for the consolidation of economic and political power.

Just in case anyone is wondering what kind of redneck rebel I am, let me say that I am a New England Yankee through and through - I just happen to have studied my history

Here in the South, the Civil War is sometimes referred to as the War of Northern Aggression.
