I love to make tie dyed t-shirts. But, whenever I make em' the color always washes out. I hate it because they always look so good before I wash them. I know I'm following the directions perfectly. I thing it might be the detergent I use. It says "Bleach Alternative" Any Suggestions
Do you rinse the clothes after you dye them? If it's any consolation, that happens to me too, but after about a hundred washes. How quickly do yours fade?
davidrig, just helped out at my grandgirls school making tie-dye t-shirts. we used a new kit you can get at target. it worked great and the colors seem to stay, just follow directions, everything you need is in the kit. hippiewise

I just got the stuff from wal-mart and mixed it the way it said on the directions, i let them sit overnight before i washed them, when they came out, they had faded consederably.
Drumminmama you scare the hell out of me when you say the word Rite. you once made me feel so bad about using rite to dye a pair of pants that I threw them away. I have come along way in the dye dept. I owe all of this to you and the scorn you place on my PM box RITE DYE SUCKS
rite dye sucks and that is why your shirts lose all of there color. there is a website called darmatrading somthingruther some mam will have the link I lost it when my laptop crashed and bit the big one.
www.dharmatrading.com they're great from what I hear, and they'll tell you everything you need to know.
Dharmas is great dye by the way. But also do you soak your shirts in soda ash before you put the dye into them? My friend learned how to dye by following the dead and he uses a shit load of soda ash, then lets the shirts dry out and become hard. Then the shirts just suck up the dye. Then put them in plastic bags and let them sit for at least 2 days. Rinse the shirts. Let the shirts soak in cold saltwater for a few hours and then wash. I've done it this way and the colors are just amazing. I trade my stuff at shows, and the people who even mass-produce the stuff will be my stuff cause of the soda ash treatment, the colors are just amazing.
OK David. Look for a kit by Jacquard. Dharma sells them, so does Dick Blick art supply. go price shopping. Hooby Lobby and Jo Anns fabrics might carry them, too. on dharma's site is the soda ash method. Follow it. Don't bother with salt, it only enhances certain colors and actually causes a reaction in the rest that will shorten their life (chemistry I have not quite worked out, but it has something to do with cracking the molecule) I do NOT agree that the Dharma dye recipies are good. the product fluxes too much for my taste. They bought another company's recipie book , and got a lot of those customers. We use Pro Chemical and Dye out of Mass. We have a combined 22 years of dye experience, BTW. For balls to the wall colors, see BenJamin's dyes. We are all about intricate, and strong color. A shirt needs to have a mix of medium and distance impact. What binding are you doing?
