how do you know which words have 'ou' instead of just 'o'? or do all of the words that have just the 'o' in the u.s. have the 'ou' in canada?

    like colours, favourites...

would 'genious' be spelled like that or is there no 'o'? thats always the one that confyooses me.

i think it is just on the "-or" sound, like in colour, honour neighbour and such

its cause we stayed British instead of suceeding from the Empire

Yeah you just kind of learn the words as you go along, like anything.
It's just the way it goes.
I'm British, but Canadian spellings are obviously pretty similar (more so than American ones).

Not going to go down the cultural elitist route. Still think maybe 'American' should be declared a seperate language, there aree enough diffrences to make it worth the effort.
Not just the spellings, it's pronounciations too.
The American one of aluminum (sp) [ah-loo-min-um] is not even close to the British [alley-min-ee-um]. So it sounds really weird to me. Have to listen carefully and figure it out.

Oh and we say loo-ten-ant, well I do.
