i'v heard they were really good, but I dont know where to start. anyone got any album/song suggestions?
what do you like now? I was a huge cheesehead in the late 90s and into 2000. Bluegrass reggae years, so to speak. Archive.org has lots of shows, and friendsofcheese.com has setlists. my personal faves (and I'm a bit folkie, so take this as you want) are Bigger isn't Better, Mauna Bowa (Jean Luc Ponty cover) Little hands, San Jose, the original Wake Up. also, they just has an E-Town taping, so if any radio in your area broadcasts it, you might want to catch it.
Definitly get the album Outside Inside. It is my personal favorite of SCI and maybe my favorite cd in general. There are some really amazing tracks on it
huh, I only like the last two tracks, and I really dislike the Wake Up rework. Big style change, I guess.
However I REALLLY like Roll Over and Up the canyon is sweet. but these are not the highpoints of SCI IMHO.
Outside and inside, joyful sound, close your eyes, lost, and black and white are my favorite songs on the album. I think all there are really great tracks.
No problem.. The username is something my friend always calls me, so I thought it would be fitting for this site.
download Round the Wheel, Best Feeling, Little Hands, 100 Year Flood, and How Mountain Girls Can Love...those are awesome!
Climb and Shine, if you can find them. Kang's roomie walked into the house while Mike was listening to some early mix tracks for Outside Inside. Jack stops, listens for a minute and asks "who is this?" Mike looks up, annoyed, and says "us." Jack swears it sounded like Pink Floyd or Zeppelin. Wish I'd have been a fly on that wall!
check out their newest work, one step closer, also their take on dave burbek is pretty cool, thats on carnival 99... "damn the rules"- john coltrane
See a show!!! Ain't notin' like the freakyness of an incident! But yeah, just start downloading shows from archive. Black clouds, Mouna Boa, Rivertrance, Yo Se... the list would go on and on... but yeah those boys have evolved so much and just keep growing on me. They have definately filled the hole that Phish left in me. Cheese has this laid back, soulful jam style that just sucks me into their world.
since they have a million jams and live songs not on the "main" albums, i would like to know which ones you cheeseheads find the most essential. i love footprints, birdland, and jellyfish the most from the carnival cds, and just lately i heard a couple live tunes, howard, and this must be the place, that are pretty dang cool, tho maybe they are newer cuz they dont have that older psychadelic atmosphere like the 90s stuff.., but since SCI has like so many original tunes only on live albums, and so many diff versions of them, itd be cool if ya gave reccomendations on the best SCI moments of live history! itd be kinda inconvenient to try to buy all 2000+ SCI tunes myself to fiure out just what performances are the most essential, ya know?
oh well then... friendsofcheese.com we (community we) started being archiving freaks way back. I was one of the first 90 people on IncidentaList, a break off of LoS list, and we spun off Yonder's list, too. Those were the days.
I like all of the 'On the Road' series. I've got one from Camden, NJ that is really cool. It's 3 cd's for what i think was about $17 or some crazy ass deal like that. They've got em' from all around the country so it's pretty cool.
I'll second that. Larry Fox (who runs the OTR series) is an old time taper from the Frank Seanez days (between Frank and Mike Juday, you got everything your could possibly want) A good Austin Freak with a wonderful ear. Well worth it.
Download lots of SCI shows at Archive.org, speaking of which, gotta see if the show i want is up yet!
prophet, just so you know, if the band allows taping, they are not bootlegs. They are tapes or now, discs. tapes from unallowed shows/ artists are bootlegs. from "bootlegger" as liquor runner in the Prohibition years. usually it's cool to trade discs but not openly move boots. my SCI shows are tapes/discs. My Ravi Shankar is a boot.
