Hey I'm new to the forums, I am 19 years old. I don't look much like a hippie but my taste in music, lifestyle, and political agendas register under hippie. I want to look more hippie. I should mention that I am a GUY. I don't want things that are too outrageous but Hippie none the less.

i think we need a sticky of this question......
i know we have a sticky of actual websites, but i think we need a sticky of advice on where to shop in a thrifty and self reflective manor. This question pops up at least once a week...

Not everybody has sewing machines or the talent of sewing. It's not something that just comes to everybody, it's a real gift. Geez, these stereotypes of "real hippies" are starting to bug the crap out of me. Man, all you gotta do is be yourself and be peace-loving and open-minded. If hippies went by rules and strict stereotypes, then they wouldn't even exist to begin with.

GratefulBeatle, hang around here for awhile, there are some really talented people on here that I'm sure would be willing to sew you up some threads for reasonable prices. You can also check out Ebay and thrift shops. You never know what you might find.

    Whats a "real hippy?"

I didnt know such a thing existed.

So am i only a "real hippy" when I
wear my dashiki shirt I bought,
or the one my wife made me?

Or am i only a "real hippy" when
I listen to The Who, or can I listen
    to Gaelic Rock?

Or am I a "real hippy" anyway?

Im not a pacifist, i dont smoke pot,
dont drive a bus (but a mini van)

    Im natural, open-minded, and passionate,
those three things make me hip, not
what I wear, smoke, or listen to.

there's a ton of mamas on here, cre, funkyphresh, supermommy, gruvenmama, lots and lots. There's also gypsyrose, I've ordered from them a bit, they're pretty good, and also try www.happyhippie.com. Click on "clothing" on the far left side, TONS of clothing sites.

    good luck!

oh, also, try thrift stores, like somone already said, they're cheap (mostly) and have an amazing selection, just be willing to dig.

I absolutly hate this thread. It's like the hippy look is going mainstream. Who cares if you look like a hippy just fucking wear what makes you comfortable, I hate when people ask for advice. People are striving to fit into the stereotypes now a days. Hippy is not about fucking looks dude. Do I look like a hippy? I don't give a shit if I do I wear what suits my personality I don't always wear skirts or tye dye or peace signs I just wear whatever the fuck is closest to my when I wake up. It's the actions you take that make you an expressionalist not the statement you make with your atire...

hey, you guys, you're being a little harsh on the newbie

    my advice:

try not to buy clothes that are made in sweatshops. buy fair trade goods.

and try to wear clothes that are made out of materials that are made ethically if you're buying them new--ie, hemp, or organic cotton, not the pesticide and herbicide laden stuff that's destroying water sources and contributing to skyrocketing cancer rates.

if you buy second hand clothing, then you're supporting recycling. (yay! :) )

if you patch your clothes, then you're keeping them out of a landfill. as beautiful as some of the new patchy stuff is that you can buy from some of the talented seamstresses around here, the idea behind patchy threads is the whole 'tread lightly on the planet', conservation thing. some of the sewing mamas do use recycled fabric though~buy from them when you can!

http://www.rawganique.com/ has some beautiful clothes that sortof fit in to my idea of what conscious clothing should be, but i prefer to shop locally whenever possible as well, to support my local economy, and keep my dollars circulating closer to home. whenever you spend money at one of the big box stores, it immediately leaves your community. we vote with the money we spend, so spend wisely!

i agree with nimh, dont buy stuff that is made in a sweat shop, but it is kinda hard to find clothing that is not made in the us. There are pleanty of people on here, including myself, that sew and im sure anyone will be glad to sew you up some clothing. thrift store shopping is the best and ebay too, or even go to flea market and garage sales on the weekends. but you shouldnt dress a certain way just to fit in with a group of people. wear what you like, who care what anyone says. if your into tie dye, make them your self. its very simple to do and fun. plus no one else will have the same one as you. You can either do it the easy way and go to a craft store and buy a tie dye kit to help you get started or go out and buy dye and soda ash and try it that way. stay in this forum for a bit, even go back a few pages and check out some of the thread and see if the style of clothing in here is something you would be interseted in.

environmental, i think you are out of line with that rant.

I agree, you cant "dress" hippy and be hippy, or maybe
you can, hip isnt an elitist group with guidelines.

Whats wrong with asking advice, maybe he wants to
dress him feelings but lacks the resource, or
words (except "hippy") to find what he wants.

What if he wants to wear a cool paisly dashiki,
but has never ever seen one in a store?

    Whats wrong with asking?

If you didnt know where to get all
that steel you wear, wouldnt you
ask someone where to get it?

and to the newbie, check out gypsy rose,
google it, but they sell good clothes,
and donate some of the money to the
    causes that support the makers.

    Good company, but beware,
you may be labeled a poser
or a wannabe, or trying to fit
    a stereotype LOL

Why dont we all just wear
    jogging pants and tshirts,
    comfortable as hell, and
    stereotype free.

    But wouldnt that suck.

I agree with heron, enviromental, you have a lot of anger to work out. I remember being your age and mad at the world, with all my piercings and the word "fuck" flying out of my mouth every 5 words. But if we are going to call ourselves members of the "hip" forums, we should act it...and be kind to other members.
I say, wear what looks good on you...and feels earthy. Try to buy clothing that makes the least impact on the earth. If you do a search for "iron lion" on Ebay - she carries TONS of cool gear that is all fair trade and you can get some items in her auctions wicked cheap :)
    Peace and Many Blessings.
