Yeah, you should purchase a banjo. You should also purchase an empty barrel, a confederate flag, a pair of oil-covered overalls, and grow a 3ft. long white beard. Don't forgot to ditch the shoes and any attempts at personal hygiene.

    mark.

    yeah go for it

on the subject of Banjos check this little beauty out
Paul Metzger's Modified Banjo. It's got an added sitar bridge, he can make this thing sound like a Theremin, bouzouki, Oud, sitar ...and erm banjo ;)
the sounds and music this guy can coax out of this thing have to be heard to be believed :)

hehe me too! as far as I know he makes 'em for his own use so I'd expect you probably couldn't put a price on something that obscure, they sound amazing in his hands
here's the one he recorded his 3 Improvisations for Modified Banjo album on

and this is the guitar he recorded his debut album on

I think you should, if you want a country or bluegrass influence in your music.

i already have somewat of a bluegrass feel to my music, but its more psychadelic/alternative feel to it. I wrote a song about a coat that was missing but it actually wasnt missing and it ends with me on the ground yelling into the microphone that i need it

    that sounds interesting...

but i dont get it when people label their music as 'alternative' .... alternative to what? everything is an alternative to something.

i would definately go for the 5 string banjo. i havent had one in a while. if you do want a 4 string, i have an old plectrum which is basically a tenor banjo with a longer neck, tuned like a cello. but the 5 string is what youre lookin for.

Go for a 5 string. Traditionally it is the banjo of choice for bluegrass... 4 strings were played in dixieland jazz... and there is no music to be found for them.. I own a 4 string and a 5 string. You will find a lot more available for the 5 string.
