why don't we record people being silent, so when you're tired of all the noise you can put your silent cd up real loud :)

    Active Noise Cancellation headphones :)

Actually this technology has been tested also in large vehicles like trucks to actually decrease the amount of wear on various parts due to vibration, making them last longer between each service etc...
It's pretty interesting and there's a wide variety of applications for such technology.

Imagine being in a football stadium and having everyone roaring, but putting on some headphones and hearing delicate, low-volume classical music really well, with only a tiny fraction of the outside noise coming in.

    hm...
yeah but why not record actual deafening silence?
with variants of unpleasant silence, silence before the storm.
    i mean classical music...yeah...i dunno

Oh the classical music thing was just as a sharp contrast to the loud noise of a football crowd, not that you actually enjoy that type of music necessarily.

You can record forms of silence, usually then when you turn them right up you'll hear the static type noises of electronics or the computer circuitry etc.. (If you're recording on a computer for example)
If it's on a cassette you'll hear the tape hiss.. Silence is only relative so how would you go about recording silence, as by definition it has no volume?

In some ambient music and nature recordings there are variations of near-silence.
    Imagien this then:

You heard a recording of a lake, the water splashing against rocks at twilight, due to the wind which is howling across the water and through some grass and trees in the background. Then for some strange reason, the wind dies down and you can hear the animals all of a sudden. Birds chirping their last song in the evening and crickets... But then the sun does go down and for a few minutes the birds go silent and all you can hear is one or two very distant crickets chirping and maybe only one or two water-y noises as the lake is now smooth and dark.

Now if that was being played in your room very loud over a stereo, I guess perhaps that silence at the end there could approach something like a deafening silence, after all the uproar of a storm before it.

Or perhaps you're being metaphorical/hypothetical and just imagining if it WERE possible to play 'deafning silence' over a CD player etc..? haha.. If that's true excuse my technical ramblings, and I agree it's a nice thought! :)

although i do think there must be some type of high tone that we cant here that you can record so it would be a deafning silence.

Yeah, above about 16-20kHz is ultrasonic and below about 16-18Hz is subsonic, both of which become inaudible to humans.
You can play ultrasonic stuff very loudly and not hear a thing but many animals will not appreciate it!

And Woodstock_Blazer thanks for your eloquent suggestion there, very 'woodstock' of you... I wasn't saying anything against Lisa here, just rambling!
Judging by your avatar, as a bass player yourself, I would have thought you found sound interesting, but your comment suggests that you're more interested in the satisfaction of your penis though and a near-illiterate display of testosterone-induced machoism.

(Though I did write a whole lot considering it's the 'pure bull' forum I agree :p)

:p you're not talking bull at all!

but, will that sound that we can't hear overpower all the sounds we can hear?

Ultrasonic wouldn't, but sub-sonic might. Subsonic, if done VERY loudly, becomes a series of deep rumblings or clicks, which you would 'feel' more than hear. This apparently can make people feel a bit odd/nauseous etc.. (The 'brown note' is apparently an urban legend for those who have heard of it!)

I doubt you could totally drown everything else out with it though no.

Woodstock, helpful as always thanks... Not helping to disprove those horrible bass-player stereotypes though lol :)
Sex, socialising, music etc.. are all fine and being a man with male urges is fine too it's all quite natural, but also humans are capable of being more than just animals because we can think ahead of time about our actions and not all of them have to involve satisfaction of our hormones, stomachs or egos! :p

That mime comment was great stinkfoot hahah...

Thanks wondergirl, that avatar is so cool, a banjo playing fruit of some some sort!! I love banjos. Are they Lemons? A Lemon Jug-Band.

ha! ego my ass- if you only knew me. But when you randomely have a go at me for paying Lisa a compliment i think its understandable if i retaliate. Anyway music is there for the whole "capable of being more than just animals because we can think ahead of time". At the end of the day how fun is interllectual slandar compared to giving lots of money to charity (which i keep doing thus bankrupting me!) bet you love bill gates.

    But...
    Like a true nature's child
We were born, born to be wild
    We can climb so high
    I never wanna die
    Born to be wild
    Born to be wild

and for the last time we are animals jeeez.
