making wings

I was wondering if anyone had an idea onf how to make wings for a butterfly costume. I'm a pretty tall girl, so these wings will probably end up being 3 to 4 feet tall and each wing being about 2 feet wide at the widest.
I thought I would try making a wire frame with thin wire, then streaching panty hose over the frame and spray painting the whole deal.
Does this sound like it would work or any better ideas?

 

I never had much luck with wings. I think it would be easier to find some you like and paint them to what you need them to be.

well, im making myself some fairy wings for haloween, and there gonna be made out of sticks cause i want them to be really earthy and woodsy looking, i ahve made them beofre and they turn our beautifuly!! ok wat u do is just take the sticks (the size u want) and just tye them or glue them into the shape of wings, and then us other sticks as the bar/base of the wings, ataching them together, then just atach straps on them, decorate and vuola!!! u have wings!! i am a gothic fairy, si im painting them black and using black fabric, but u can do watever u want to decorate them! hope that helps, if u dont want them to be wodden, just do the same with wire!

 

i made some really cool wings out of bent clothes hangers and crocheted the centers....i'll have to dig them out and take a pic if i can find them.

 

i'm going to make wings, but dragon wings. i'll let you know how they go! i'm going to be puff!!

 

if they weren't asked to hold up to to much bashing about you could probably do something with thin oak doweling, balsa wood, and tissue paper,


you know those airplanes people make with balsa and tissue? something like that.....

 

i made some really cool wings with oaktag paper. I cut up scraps of tissue paper and made a glue/water mix which made the colors bleed together. You could use poster board. About 4 pieces could make wings that size. I will try to take some pics this morning.

thank you so much for all your suggestions. i went ahead and tryed the wire andd panty-hose idea, and hallelujah, after several difficulties i got a cute pair of wings! They're a lot smaller then i ahd planned, but this will be far better for parties. I'll try to post some pics after halloween so you can see me ridiculous outfit. Thanks again!
