Hands down the frontmost jam band ever. So, tell me what you think about them. Some people can't stand them, some people worship them. I, myself, am a huge fan of The Grateful Dead. I love jam bands and The Dead just happens to have that soul that I need. So, what do you think about The Grateful Dead? ~Keep On TRUCKIN'~
Alot of people say that they're overratted and overworshipped but I think that they're underrated in most times..They are the greatest jam band ever, the greatest live band ever, and one the greatest bands ever to record an album, and still, they get overlooked by bands the the beatles and the stones (who I love also). I think they sometimes don't get the respect they deserve.
the grateful dead are hands down in my top 5 bands.....not sure which number, but they're pretty high..... i can't get enough of them...... just got dick's picks 22 the other day....it's fucking awesome!!
I love'em... they are definately at the top of my list when it comes to my favorite artist... no one can beat their live performances... best jamband of all time.. bar none
For me, the Grateful Dead wasn't just a band, it was a way of life. Even 10 years after Jerry's passing, those sweet jams and melodies still make me laugh and cry at the same time. I can't even count the number of times, even recently, that I've been on the road listening to a 1977 Franklin's Tower or a 1989 Morning Dew and feel transported back to those blissful days on tour. I remember our gypsy caravan traveling from town to town, connecting with brothers & sisters in rest areas along the way or around a late-night campfire. We'd hit the lots early, set up shop on Shakedown to vend for our traveling cash, go exploring to meet new and old friends. Then showtime! Assigned seating? NO SUCH THING! We were everywhere...groovin in the aisles, veggin out in the bleachers & spinning in the hallways. And then the lot would come alive again with the smells & sounds of fatty egg rolls & stir fry, drums & sometimes disco. A few hours later, on to the next show! How I miss my touring family & those precious times we shared. And I truly treasure each and every show where I could let my gaze fall to the stage & see Jerry's smiling face. What band other than the Grateful Dead could create this type of community spirit? The stellar jams & rhythms that evolved over the last 40 years brought us together as a tribe. Lifelong bonds were formed through the music and our love for each other. We should all feel fortunate that the scene is still going, in one form or another. As said by Jerry Garcia, "The Grateful Dead are like licorice. Not everybody like licorice, but the people that do like licorice really like licorice." Personally I go nuts over licorice. I also LOVE the dead!! They are without a doubt in my mind, the greatest band ever. It's hard to say why exactly. There's just something that gets into you and it will never leave you. I remember the first couple months I started listening I didn't dig them too much. Then one day I was really stoned and I just relized it. Ever since i've been hooked

Perhaps my favorite Jerry quote - sums it up nicely. Good to see someone as "fresh" as you (didn't want to say young) knows enough about them to know that quote. Pretty much how it went with me. For many months, I would go over to a friend's house after class, toke a bit, and listen to Dead tapes with him and his wife. Their feet would be bobbing and tapping. Mine were flat on the floor. Just didn't get it. I could understand the musicianship, but it didn't move me. Then they dragged me 'kicking and screaming' to my first show - Richmond Coliseum, October 1983. Wow, did I get it! My dad was a big dead fan. I grew up listening to the dead. And the one regret I have in life is that I've never been to a Grateful Dead show. I have not even seen The Dead. It truly sucks knowing that 30 years a culture that I claim to be part of is gone without myself experiencing any of it firsthand. I analyzed why anyone likes The Grateful Dead for school in a paper once. I said that there are 4 aspects why anyone would like the GD. First was the culture associated with it. Counterculture, jambands, hippiness, etc. The second was purely musical. The harmonies, the melodies, the solos, Jerry's distinct and comforting voice, his tone of his guitar, the musical aspect of the GD. The third was the drugs. The fourth and most important was the GD's affirmation of life. In the lyrics, the key signature, chord progressions, etc. they affirm life. Ken Kesey wrote about it in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. In almost all circumstances the songs talk about a character who's constantly down on his luck yet is genuinely happy for life or optimistic about the future. Touch of Grey, Wharf Rat, Dire Wolf, Friend of the Devil, Box of Rain, etc. They are all optimistic in the worst case scenario and that's what people need to hear out of music.
the grateful dead will forever be my favorite band.....there music will always be there after a long day to make it better........unfortunatley i will never be able to see them live.........and sometimes it makes me sad to think that......but i still have all my precious bootlegs.........theres just something about their music that makes it so special and unique and you just feel like jerry is talking directly to you
i cant find shit from 65 except for the studio session from birth of the dead which is absolutely amazing. 66 and 68 are my favorite years, although 68 doesnt have any phenomenal shows (in my opinion) , i just love the feel
