I dont know where to go next. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Devendra Banhart, Dylan's early folk stuff (pre electric), early Elliott Smith (pre fame), CocoRosie, and The Red House Painters' 1st self-titled album...... I'd like to find more musicians like these. anybody....?
If you like CocoRosie you might like Joanna Newsome's Milk-Eyed Mender. This has probably been said before but if you dig Banhart then the early Tyrannosarus Rex records are essential, My People were fair, Prophets Sages and Seers, and Unicorn. I' recommend Nick Castro and the Poison Trees album to anyone who like Banhart also (features Josephine Foster, and Espers Meg Baird). on a side note if you do check out Joanna Newsome then Josephine Foster's Born Heller - S/T album and her Hazel Eyes albums are very worthy follow-ups. Her album Josephine Foster and the Supposed is more like After Bathing at Baxters Jefferson Airplane crossed with Television and Patti Smith, it 'kin rocks basically, but is miles away from the weird folk stuff she's better known for.
thanks a lot, man. what's that album in your sig? it looks really interesting, i googled and searched allmusic but found nothing. .
ah do mean the tapestry, that's a pun on that Kelis "Milkshake" song, here http://www.adgame-wonderland.de/type/bayeux.php the otherstuff's just links to my websites
chuck-- http://www.corblund.com its not really simple folk-y, but its wicked none the less--you can download full songs off his first 2 albums off the site, and preview most of the newer 2 albums there too
I don't know much about those guys besides Dylan (of course). I'll give ya a list of some bands I've taken a liking too recently. Fairport Convention (Liege & Lief, Unhalfbricking) Van Morrison (specifically Tupelo Honey, His Band & The Street Choir, and Moondance) Syd Barrett Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger, & The Trinity Joni Mitchell Al Stewart I dunno if that'll help but that's what I've been listening to lately.
espers s/t debut is an incredible album worth checking out. iron & wine is really good as folkish music as well. mellow fingerpicking, banjos, wonderful harmonies...i'd recommond anything from him, but i think "the creek drank the cradle" would be a good place to start. vetiver is alright, it features devendra banhart in their band. Not nearly as exciting as anything banhart has done, but if you thirst for more of him, then thats a good choice. one woman you should check out is vashti bunyan, she is one of the main influences of devendra banhart, and many other new musicians today. her voice is kind of like joni mitchell, but alot better in my opnion...very soothing voice. She released one album in the 70's(just another diamond day), and then after 35, she finally released a following album called "lookaftering", that i came out today. The album has artists like banhart, andy cabic(from vetiver), and joanna newsom on it, helping with the instrumentation. she also helped do the song "rejoicing in the hands" on devendras album with the same name. nick drake is definitly worth checking out as well, if you havent already. "pink moon" is a good start, all just him and his guitar, except a little piano on the first track. Some people say that some of his music sounds like devendras music, but i dont see it...maybe in the picking, but they arent to similar...but its still good music
hailtothekingbaby: god damn, they're really good. i think i may have found my new obsession. thank you. everybody else: i'll check all those out in the coming days... thanks a lot!

Try some Harmonium It's in french(from Quebec ) tho .. it's like progressive -experemental music .. Almost all their songs are good but my personal favorite is Pour un Instant
Slint, Drive Like Jehu and Neutral Milk Hotel. You mightn't like the first two, but I reckon you should like Neutral Milk Hotel.
