Some people judge hummus by the stuff they get at the local supermarket. I assure you, that is NOT the type of hummus to eat! Find a mom and pop store (usually middle eastern), they have the right ingredients and the stuff is always fresh. For those who automatically say they hate hummus, tell them that big supermarket chains or any chains for that matter never have the real deal. Find a family shop for REAL hummus!
hummus is super easy to make yourself. and you can add different things to it to make it better suit your taste (i like chopped up jalapanos) all you need is a can of chick peas (garbonzo beans),. some fresh garlic, fresh lemon and some tahini paste (not nesecary, but very tasty).
Yummy yummy.. hummus is some of my favorite food ever. I like all kinds, the fake store bought kind, the kind I make myself, and the kind my Arabic friend's mom makes me (she made it once and I loved it so much that she ALWAYS is sending me some... and I love her mom). I make my own alot and I'm the only one who will eat it because I put so much garlic in. Super yummy.
I love Hummus, the shop where I work sells great red pepper and chilli hummus! Now I'm making myself hungry!
My grandma's caretaker is an Israeli. Her hummus is amazing. Her husband wants to set up a Middle Eastern Deli in Vancouver. I hope he does, because she's making the hummus.
Here is a good recipe for hummus: Hummus 2 cups canned chickpeas (garbanzo beans), liquid reserved 2/3 cup tahini paste* 5 tablespoons olive oil , divided 1/4 cup lemon juice 3 cloves garlic Salt and pepper to taste 1 teaspoon paprika 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional) *You can make your own tahini paste in a food processor or blender by grinding toasted sesame seeds. Toast the sesame seeds over medium heat until golden brown, about 3 minutes. In a food processor, puree the chickpeas, tahini, 3 tablespoons olive oil, lemon juice and garlic until smooth, adding a little of the reserved liquid if the mixture seems too thick; it will be slightly grainy. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a shallow bowl or plate. Combine the paprika and the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil, drizzle the mixture over the top, and garnish with chopped parsley, if desired. Serve with pita bread triangles. Makes about 3 cups.
if you don't have tahini paste, you can use a little peanut butter.. may sound odd, but if you just use a little it really makes a nice difference.
I usually buy a bag of dried chickpeas for about 2 bucks, then you soak them for 24 hours and drain(or cook em for a few hours) then I freeze what I can't use for later. This gives you many more days of hummus and no *can* taste(if your sensitive to that kinda stuff) Hummus for me is : presoaked Chickpeas Lots of Olive Oil Tahini Lemon Juice and whatever good stuff I have on hand, be it jalapenos, peppers, herbs, garlic or tomatos! Salt n peppa to taste. Throw it in the blender or food processor to taste, sometimes I add a little water if I can't use too much olive oil.
I sometimes buy store hummus, which isn't too bad but I do prefer the homemade stuff.... every time I make it, it's a bit different and always very awesome...
I've been falling in love with hummus lately. I have had homemade before and it was pretty good, but a bit too chunky for me. I usually buy Athenos (I think that's the name). It's pretty good. I have the garlic/herb one in the refridge now.
I bought a 12oz container of "Spinach & Feta" flavored hummus today for $3.53. This stuff taste GREAT~obviously it ain't vegan with feta in the name
Sometimes I make my own with pre-soaked beans or canned but if I can't find the time there's this mom 'n pop Lebanese store, I leave them my tupperware and they fill it up for me on their next batch. They give me a good discount AND I get to reduce packaging, isn't that awesome.
