i'm going to my first yoga lesson tomorrow morning, but i havent got a yoga mat. is it really necessary to have my own? when i called the teacher i forgot to ask him if they provided mats at the yoga centre (duh) and now its a bit late to call him up...what do you think?

i dont think its mega important....you should prolly take a thick towel or a thin blanket though....depending on the surface of where you are going. one of the benefits of a mat is when you do poses where you are laying on your back and need something to cradle your head or hips...a towel or blanket should do just fine though.

As long as theres a hard floor, you don't need a mat, unless your doing some really fierce moves. I always avoid those sticky mats- make me fell gross

I personally like using a nice soft blanket. But I do my yoga on carpet, so there's no concern of slipping with the blanket. If the studio you are going to has hardwood or tile floors, you might need a yoga mat to prevent slipping.

It has been my experience that most places of instruction will usually provide a matt, at least for your use while at the studio.
