question on using a gravity bong

i dont generally like gravity bongs, but i sometimes use mine. just a cheap homemade peice, works great, but i generally prefer smaller hits taken gradually over time. i like GETTING high as much as i like BEING high. a gravity bong is just too fast and hardhitting for me usually. though if i have a lot of pot and dont have to worry about smell, it can be nice to take a couple gravity hits and then smoke a bowl.

the thing i like least about them is how harsh the smoke usually is if i'm smoking by myself. of course it all depends on the peice and the person, but mine has the bowl built in to the cap of the pop bottle, which if it isnt screwed on will leak air and defeat the purpose of a gravity bong in the first place (getting a shitload of thick smoke blasted into your lungs very rapidly). so i've got on hand on the peice, raising it slowly to get more and thicker smoke, the other hand on my lighter, and then i need to put down the lighter and unscrew the cap before taking my hit. it normally takes me 5-20 seconds after burning the herb to get the hit even ready to be inhaled, and thats plenty of time for the smoke to go stale and become REALLY fucking nasty. but then, i'm the picky, snobbish son of a bitch that blows through the downpipe in the bong to clear it rather than just hit the stale smoke in there if i didnt get it all in the first hit.

i have found a good way to use my gravity bong without the smoke going stale, but it seems to be more hassle than it's really worth when i can just load up my bowl or vaporizer or smoke a joint or something. the way i cut down the time it takes for me to hit it is pretty simple, so i'll describe it for people who may have the same problem and the means to fix it. the metal bowl i use is the universal type interchangable for any number of crappy plastic bongs. i have a large wooden chillum, and the bottom end of it fits quite nicely into the metal bowl, but still needs to be supported to remain there. i can make sure the metal bowl is clean, and then make sure there is a screen in the chillum, and with one hand hold on to the metal and wood and raise the bong, and with my other hand i can light the pot in the chillum. then the cap can be screwed on as tight as you want, and you never have to take it off, because you can just remove the chillum and push it down and breathe in the smoke coming the "wrong" way out of the metal peice. i dont like the fact that i have to use wood for this, but hell, gravity bongs NEVER taste good, so it makes no real difference. you could use some small glass bats for this the same way as with a large chillum, but mine has a flattened mouthpeice and doesnt work too well this way.

if you try this, PLEASE make sure the gravity bongs normal bowl has no pot or ash in it, cause otherwise that shit will fly right out into your face when you try to hit it.
