Had my war - it was dumb - we lost - no fun. I don't think this one is going to be any fun either - going to give it a pass myself.

It's like the early 70's a bit, Nixon and Vietnam, Bush and Iraq. The 2004 election was like the 1972 election, Kerry is like McGovern.

I am very antiwar - like most vets. However, what you say is true - there were many wars that had to be fought. The goal is still to stop having them. In addition, when I said that my war was no fun - that was sarcasm folks - not a suggestion that their was such a thing as a fun war.

In some war the gunmen have fun. Such as in the Lebanese civil war, they liked it, it was like a hollywood war movie and they were actors. Lebanese militiamen were asked by one of his dudes that why he goes out and fights and kills Lebanese gunmen and they said they loved to shoot. The people who are deprived and pissed off get to express their discontent in the urban street fighting.

The Lebanese civil war 1975 to 81 was marked mostly by a series of massacres, mostly of unarmed civilians. I am sure there were as you say gunmen who enjoy that kind of thing. Every country has its lunatics. However, I do not believe that anything that was close to a real war, with both sides taking causalities would be described as fun by any but a tiny fraction of the participants.

Go die to save me ten cents a litre at the pump. And feel justified.

I was born in Beirut in the 70's. I lived through some of it. The worst I remember was in 1989, the big bang when East Beirut and West Beirut just unleashed a savage bombardment on each other. But in 1975 and 1976 it was the most brutal and destructive. it got more sporadic in the late 70's and then in the 80's it got very fucked up too. The Lebanese civil war was full of brutal urban street fighting. You have to experience it to know really how the war was. Those were very dark times. It's sad what happened. And you are wrong! It was from 1975-1990 (or 1991). The 1970's was a dark, depressing time with a lot of dsicontent. And all the social revolutuions and the hippie influence and the music of the 60's and 70's and the decline in morality and so on and so on were major factors in the reason why the young generation in Lebanon went mad in the 70's. Kent State, Vietnam, the counterculture, the rock music things. There was a lot of anger in those times in America and in the other countries.

With your background, you are an expert on the conflict. I quoted information that I had read. I would not question the reporting of an individual who was born in the country and lived through the times. I agree with you that you have to experience war to know how bad it becomes. You have my respect for surviving such a dark time.
